(Dan Tri) - This engine is produced by a joint venture between the Chinese car company and Renault and is tuned in Germany.
The third-generation Mercedes CLA is on the way, and it will use a 2.0L turbocharged engine made in China, developed by the Horse Powertrain joint venture between Geely and Renault; then tuned in Germany.
Horse will supply engines to a number of other manufacturers, such as Volvo, Nissan, and Mitsubishi.

Mercedes has shared the engineering to develop this internal combustion engine, which is expected to produce 250 horsepower and 360Nm of torque, up from the 221 horsepower and 350Nm specifications.
Production will take place in China, but the catalytic converter won’t be installed until the engine arrives in Germany, to ensure it meets strict European emissions standards. This cross-continental production process may seem a bit convoluted, but it reflects the increasing globalization of the auto industry.
It may seem strange that the new CLA uses engines from Geely and Renault, but it's worth noting that Geely CEO Li Shufu owns 10% of Mercedes-Benz. Geely also operates a joint venture with Mercedes to produce electric cars under the Smart brand.
And this isn't the first time the CLA has used a non-Mercedes engine. The first and second generation CLA 180d models both used diesel engines developed in collaboration with Renault and Nissan.
According to CarNewsChina, some sources say this 4-cylinder engine can be combined with a 48V mild-hybrid system that integrates the starter motor directly into the gearbox, making the car run smoother and more energy-efficient.
Imported engines aren’t the only Chinese tech featured on the CLA. The compact sedan also uses an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) developed by Chinese startup Momenta.
While it’s a relatively new name, Mercedes-Benz has been backing Momenta since 2017. The company has also received investment from GM, SAIC, and Yunfeng Capital, a company owned by billionaire Jack Ma. Momenta’s ADAS system doesn’t rely on high-resolution maps, but instead supports driving in urban environments.
The CLA is also expected to have a pure electric version, using a 238 horsepower motor mounted on the rear wheel, combined with an 89.6kWh battery pack, expected to have an operating range of 750km/charge, according to the somewhat relaxed test results of WLTC, but if following the standards of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the parameters could be under 645km/charge.
