Following a nomination by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Seah Kian Peng was elected by the Singapore Parliament to replace former Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin, who resigned on July 17 due to personal scandals.
In addition, Tan Chuan-Jin has also been criticized for making "unconventional parliamentary remarks" directed at a member of the opposition Workers' Party in Parliament last April.
