Responding to questions before the National Assembly about the impact of slow removal of harmful content on children, the ministry noted that much content that violates community guidelines remains even after being reported.
A recent government review of six social media platforms found numerous shortcomings in user safety measures, particularly on X (Twitter) and HardwareZone.
The results showed that these platforms often fail to enforce their community guidelines, putting children at risk of exposure to inappropriate content.
Even better performing platforms, like Facebook and YouTube, can't completely prevent kids from accessing some age-inappropriate content.
According to a new report by Singapore's Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), child accounts on X can easily access adult pornography, with similar risks also found on Facebook, YouTube and HardwareZone.
Online safety is a key priority for the Singapore Government. In July 2023, the country issued the Online Safety Code of Practice, requiring social media platforms to minimize harmful content and improve reporting tools.
In January 2025, Singapore continued to tighten management with the Online Safety Code of Practice for Application Distribution Services, requiring application platforms to apply age verification measures. This new regulation will take effect from March 31.
IMDA will continue to monitor the responses of social media platforms in its annual online safety report, scheduled to be released in June this year.
