K Hospital has just successfully performed a complicated cervical spinal cord tumor surgery for patient NVH (55 years old, residing in Yen Bai ).
According to his family, since 2023, Mr. H. has often suffered from stiff neck and numbness in both arms. He subjectively thought that if he diligently massaged, acupunctured, and acupressured, his condition would improve. However, recently, when the symptoms became more severe, he went to the hospital for a check-up.
At K Hospital, Mr. H. was examined by doctors and had an MRI scan, which discovered a high cervical spinal cord tumor (C3) in a complex location that needed to be treated to remove quickly, avoiding the risk of losing nerve root function, leading to limb weakness or long-term sensory disturbances.
Master, Doctor Nguyen Thai Hoc - Department of Neurosurgery, K Hospital said that patient H. had a high cervical spinal cord tumor, the spinal cord tumor followed the nerve roots related to the motor and sensory functions of both arms and legs, surgery needed to be extremely careful because if careless, it could cause quadriplegia or affect breathing.
Doctors have applied modern methods such as surgical microscopes, ultrasonic tumor suction knives, and nerve root warning systems during surgery, helping doctors clearly observe the tumor and surrounding nerve structures, thereby accurately separating the tumor, limiting damage to the spinal cord, and avoiding effects on nerve roots.
After more than 3 hours of intense surgery, the operation was successful. Currently, the patient can walk, do light activities, and eat normally just 3 days after the surgery.
Mr. H. shared: “I did not think that I could walk and return to daily activities so soon after surgery. I am truly grateful to the doctors. I find our country’s medical team very good and dedicated.”
Dr. Nguyen Duc Lien, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, K Hospital, recommends that patients with prolonged neck pain that does not improve with pain medication should go to medical facilities for examination and cervical spine X-rays to clearly identify the disease before treatment.
“Surgeries performed at medical facilities with modern equipment and highly skilled doctors will help patients recover quickly and shorten treatment time,” Dr. Duc Lien emphasized.
Mr. H's case shows that this is not only a successful medical intervention but also a wake-up call for the community to not be subjective with symptoms of prolonged spinal pain and the importance of screening and early detection of tumors and cancers.
