Bridging the gap from research to the market.

On May 14-15, the Intellectual Property Office, the Hanoi Department of Science and Technology, Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, in collaboration with Truong Thanh Media Joint Stock Company, organized an intensive course on the topic "Intellectual Property - an effective tool to promote innovation in research and commercialization of research results".

Professor Dr. Nguyen Hoang Giang, Vice Rector of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering.

The training program was organized to equip lecturers and scientists with a comprehensive understanding of intellectual property rights, the basis for the creation and establishment of intellectual property rights, owners and their obligations, intellectual property management skills, patent information search skills, and how to write patent descriptions.

The training course is meticulously designed with support from the Ipedu.vn platform of the Institute for Intellectual Property Training and Development, covering everything from theoretical knowledge to in-depth practical skills. The program delves into a series of practical skills, including guidance on patent search methods and patent description writing. This is a crucial step in helping researchers assess the novelty of their solutions and complete their patent application dossiers.

The event is expected to become a crucial leverage point, helping authors to protect their work to the fullest extent, while creating a solid legal basis for establishing intellectual property rights, thereby promoting successful commercialization and technology transfer.

According to experts, in the context of integration and the development of a knowledge-based economy , scientific research activities at universities should not be limited to academic papers or completed projects, but should aim to solve practical problems for businesses and society.

However, how can scientific research products become intellectual property? It's through knowledge related to intellectual property rights, especially the skills to establish rights to research results. This skill is key to developing many potential technical solutions and inventions that contribute to socio-economic development.

At the same time, educating about intellectual property in schools from primary and university levels to the business community and startups is a crucial step in realizing Resolution No. 57.

Mandatory requirements for protecting intellectual property.

Professor Nguyen Hoang Giang, Vice Rector of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, stated that intellectual property rights are extremely important in carrying out scientific tasks in universities and in technology transfer. Therefore, we consider promoting intellectual property as a strategy and responsibility of each university in the overall context of Vietnam.

According to Professor Nguyen Hoang Giang, many scientists have numerous works that can revolutionize a field, especially in technology. However, without intellectual property protection, it will be difficult to encourage scientists to continue their research, and it will be impossible to create significant economic value.

"At Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, we aspire to build an ecosystem where the intellectual property rights of our faculty members are protected from the very beginning, from the idea stage. Within that ecosystem, we will work with our faculty members to register with the Intellectual Property Office, Ministry of Science and Technology. Then, we will connect with businesses to transform intellectual property into practical applications," said Professor Nguyen Hoang Giang.

Dr. Tran Nam Tu, Deputy Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Information, Ministry of Education and Training, assessed that we have chosen a very "right" and "opportunistic" time to discuss intellectual property. This is a very important issue - a "key" to product development.

However, through interactions with businesses, including technology companies, only truly large entities that want to develop a sustainable reputation and brand are beginning to pay attention to this issue.

Dr. Tran Nam Tu argues that intellectual property is a crucial "output" of the scientific research and innovation cycle. At each stage, each step in the process involves the right to establish intellectual property rights. Understanding intellectual property is a mandatory requirement to protect one's own intellectual property and respect the property of others.

During the course, Dr. Le Ngoc Lam, Director of the Institute for Intellectual Property Training and Development, noted that inventions are valid only within the national territory. Therefore, we cannot use the rights granted in Vietnam to enforce them in the United States or China. To obtain protection anywhere, we must register the invention in that country.

"The only exception is in some regions where they have signed separate agreements. For example, if an application is submitted to a common region and a certificate is granted, then that right is valid in all countries belonging to that region as agreed upon. But the general principle remains national territory," Dr. Le Ngoc Lam explained.

Through this course, the organizers hope to contribute to promoting intellectual property culture in universities, strengthening the connection between training, scientific research, innovation, and the commercialization of research results.
