Yonhap news agency reported that two civilians were seriously injured. Seven civilians and two soldiers are currently being treated in hospital, according to a South Korean Defense Ministry official.
Meanwhile, Thai news agencies, citing information from the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs , reported that four of the injured were Thai citizens. The South Korean Ministry of Defense has yet to confirm this report.
Acting Defense Minister Kim Seon-ho apologized for the accident, pledged to make every effort to restore and compensate for damaged property, and said a thorough investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the accident and necessary measures would be taken to prevent similar accidents.
A South Korean Air Force official cited initial investigation results as saying that the cause of the unintended bombing was pilot error. One of the fighter pilots entered the wrong target coordinates before takeoff.
The South Korean Defense Ministry has suspended all live-fire drills until the exact cause of the accident is determined, and has set up a special committee to support recovery efforts in the bombed village of Nogok-ri.
Meanwhile, the military has also faced criticism for its relatively slow response to the bombing. Firefighters responded immediately, just one minute after the incident occurred. However, the Joint Chiefs of Staff did not receive the first report of the incident for about 20 minutes.
The rare incident occurred on March 6, when two KF-16 fighter jets accidentally dropped eight MK-82 bombs outside a training ground in Pocheon City, North Gyenggi Province, about 40 km north of Seoul, during a live-fire exercise, causing injuries and damage to civilian buildings.
