At the meeting between the Board of Directors of the Department of Health and the Board of Directors of Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital regarding the reflection "Emergency patients have to lie on the floor of Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital for IV fluids" this morning, the Board of Directors of the Hospital reported the situation of patient overload at the hospital's Emergency Department and invited the leaders of the Department of Health to go on a field trip to grasp the operation of the Emergency Department and the hospital's inpatient departments.
Accordingly, Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital is a specialized hospital for tuberculosis and lung diseases with a scale of 960 inpatient beds (before April 2024, it will be 800 inpatient beds).
The bed capacity in the past 11 months was 103.9%. Through the hospital's report and direct survey in the emergency areas, the Intensive Care Unit and the inpatient wards of Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital, the Department of Health recorded a local overload situation in the hospital's Emergency Department.
The number of emergency patients has increased in recent days, leading to a temporary shortage of hospital beds and the use of measures that do not guarantee patient comfort.
The leaders of the Department of Health said that the things that Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital needs to do immediately include: Arranging more beds in the inpatient departments, with a total of about 50 beds expected to be arranged. The Department of Health will mobilize the reserve beds to support Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital (if the hospital needs it); Organizing examinations and screening of patients being monitored and treated in the Emergency Department, transferring patients who do not meet the emergency criteria to inpatient departments that have arranged more beds; The hospital deploys a specialized working group to improve the quality of the Emergency Department, directly directed by the Hospital Director.
At the same time, the leader of the Department of Health said that in addition to short-term solutions, in the long term, the Hospital needs to: Improve infrastructure and necessary equipment to improve the capacity to treat seriously ill patients in each clinical department; apply digital transformation to help the Emergency Department promptly grasp the situation of hospital beds in inpatient departments for patient transfer; develop and update admission criteria for the Emergency Department and inpatient departments; strengthen counseling activities, support activities for patients and their families, and survey patient dissatisfaction in the Emergency Department and inpatient departments of the hospital.
