Huge gallstones in the common bile duct cause severe bile duct obstruction.

SKĐS - On February 9th, Friendship Hospital announced the successful intervention for a 44-year-old male patient suffering from severe bile duct obstruction due to gallstones in the common bile duct, helping the patient quickly improve symptoms and shorten treatment time.

Previously, the patient presented with epigastric and right hypochondriac pain, accompanied by jaundice and persistent fatigue. Laboratory results showed elevated liver enzymes and clear evidence of biliary obstruction with a bilirubin level above 300 µmol/l.

Magnetic resonance cholangiography (MCR) images showed dilated biliary tracts, caused by stones located in the lower segment of the common bile duct.

Following a consultation, the doctors in the Gastroenterology Department ordered endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) guided by digital subtraction angiography (DSA). During the procedure, the team successfully removed a 11.5 x 9 mm gallstone, relieving the bile duct obstruction.

After the procedure, the patient's jaundice and abdominal pain improved significantly, liver and gallbladder function gradually stabilized, and the treatment time was shortened. According to Dr. Dinh Quy Minh, Head of the Gastroenterology Department at Friendship Hospital, symptoms such as abdominal pain, jaundice, fatigue, and elevated liver enzymes are not simply gastritis or common digestive disorders.

This could be a sign of several dangerous liver and biliary tract diseases such as gallstones in the common bile duct, bile duct obstruction, cholangitis, or other conditions requiring early intervention.

The large gallstone was successfully removed by the doctors.

Doctors advise that when unusual symptoms appear, patients should not self-treat at home. Early examination, accurate diagnosis, and timely intervention are crucial factors in preventing dangerous complications and protecting liver and bile function.
