Mr. Tran The Cuong, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, said that the sample exam questions for the 2025 high school entrance exam may be announced at the end of August, instead of in March – one month before the exam as in previous years. Regarding the specific exam plan, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training will soon announce it to candidates and parents, with the view that it will be calculated in the most appropriate way to reassure students.
For a long time, the entrance exam for 10th grade in Hanoi has always attracted the attention of the public. This exam is considered even more difficult than the annual high school graduation exam used for university and college admissions. The reason the Hanoi 10th grade entrance exam is always "heated" is because it is the locality with the highest number of applicants in the country, but the enrollment quota for public schools is only around 60%. The Hanoi Department of Education and Training allows students applying for 10th grade in the 2024-2025 school year to have three preferences for public schools (non-specialized), not including preferences for specialized schools or dual-diploma programs. However, for students with average academic performance, but not truly outstanding, the chance of being admitted to their desired school is very slim. More precisely, the main intensity of the Hanoi 10th grade entrance exam focuses on securing a place in their first-choice school.
In previous years, Hanoi's exams consisted of three subjects: Mathematics, Literature, and a Foreign Language, with a fourth subject (if any) to be announced later. This allowed students to focus on studying the subjects they already knew. However, with the new curriculum having many differences, especially the addition of integrated subjects like Natural Sciences and History-Geography, it's difficult to predict the exam format for 2025.
Currently, on several forums, many parents with children preparing to enter 9th grade are expressing concern, anxiety, and speculation about the 2025 10th grade entrance exam plan. Some junior high schools in Hanoi have even held parent meetings to announce their teaching, learning, and exam preparation plans for the 10th grade entrance exam, so that families can cooperate with the school to help students prepare effectively.
In response to students' concerns about the 2025 high school entrance exam, Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, informed that in August 2024, the Department will issue a document guiding the preparation for the 2025 high school entrance exam. One month later, the Department will announce the exam format and content.
Accordingly, students will essentially still take three subjects: Literature, Mathematics, and Foreign Language to apply for regular 10th grade classes. Students applying for specialized 10th grade classes will take an additional specialized subject exam. It is expected that in October, the Department of Education will release sample exam questions for each subject to guide secondary schools in their teaching. 2025 will be the first year that students take the 10th grade entrance exam under the 2018 General Education Program. Therefore, the exam will be designed to assess students' abilities. Specifically, the exam will require candidates to apply their learned knowledge to solve real-world problems. The new aspect lies in the level of differentiation and innovation of the exam questions in each subject, closely adhering to the objectives of the 2018 General Education Program at the secondary school level. Regarding specialized exams, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training's orientation is to replace the specialized exam subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, and Geography with specialized exams in Natural Sciences and History-Geography, in accordance with the 2018 general education program at the lower secondary level.
The first locality to approve the 2025 10th grade enrollment plan.
In early August, the People's Committee of Quang Nam province became the first locality to approve the enrollment plan for 10th grade in non-specialized public high schools starting from the 2025-2026 school year. Quang Nam will organize entrance exams in three subjects: Literature, Mathematics, and English – combined with consideration of junior high school academic records for admission, marking a 10-year hiatus from solely admissions based on academic records. Enrollment quotas will be based on school size, management staff, teachers, employees, facilities, equipment, and other necessary conditions for teaching and learning, in accordance with regulations and balanced with the overall enrollment ratio of the locality (at the district level).
