(QBĐT) - While most of her peers love pop and electronic music, Tran Anh Thu has a special passion for folk and chamber music. With her natural talent and efforts on the journey to reach her dream of becoming a professional singer, Anh Thu is gradually conquering music playgrounds in and outside the province.
Becoming the champion of the first Quang Binh singing contest in 2024, Tran Anh Thu left an impression on the audience with her sweet and powerful voice and confident and mature performance style even though she was only 15 years old.
"Watering" with folk songs
When meeting her at a small house in Hai Thanh ward (Dong Hoi city), Anh Thu was completely different when standing on a colorful stage. She returned to the true meaning of a 15-year-old innocent student, loving life with a bright smile and shoulder-length hair. However, when mentioning her passion for music, Anh Thu became more mature with her profound, frank and sincere sharing.
Born into a family with no one in the arts, but since childhood, the love of music, especially folk music from Thu's father - Mr. Tran Dai Thang, has "watered" the little girl's soul. Mr. Thang was also the first teacher who taught Anh Thu how to hum along to folk songs. Like plants, the little girl's love of music grew naturally, simple but strong and enduring. Anh Thu was passionate about singing along to each melody, and the more she sang, the more immersed she became, even though at that time, she was not old enough to understand all the layers of meaning in each lyric.
The older she gets, the more experience she has to understand the song, the more she loves this special music genre and the more she learns, the more she sees the unique values of folk songs. Thu maturely said: “The more I sing, the more I love this music genre and want to spread my love for folk songs to my friends of the same age. That is also the way for our generation to preserve and promote the value of folk and lyrical melodies”. Thanks to that love, Anh Thu became the youngest member of the Hai Thanh Ward Cheo Can and Bong Dance Club.
Master Pham Dieu Vinh, Deputy Head of the Department of Primary and Preschool Education, Quang Binh University, is a vocal teacher who has been with Anh Thu for the past 2 years. She has wholeheartedly taught Thu from the simplest lessons to training her courage and confidence in front of the stage lights. She has also accompanied Anh Thu in all large and small music competitions in and outside the province.
Teacher Dieu Vinh said that when she first accepted and listened to Anh Thu sing, she realized that this was a girl with a good voice and musical talent. Anh Thu is like a bright but rough gem, if polished, that gem will shine even brighter. After a while, with passion and belief, teacher Dieu Vinh taught Anh Thu vocal techniques suitable for her voice and ability. Compared to the little student who first came to vocal music class, now, Anh Thu has matured significantly in both her singing voice and performance style.

Confidently go out to "the big sea"
Anh Thu said that the first stage was a kindergarten performance. The 5-year-old girl at that time began to love the spotlight, loved to sing in front of a crowd and was excited when receiving applause from the audience. The grassroots stages fostered Thu's confidence on stage, fostering a special love for music. At the age of 9, Anh Thu boldly participated in the national child talent search competition. That year, she received the promising award, opening the way for her journey to conquer major music playgrounds.
In 2022, Anh Thu and her brother won the A prize at the Rose City Melody Festival with the song "Em Be Bao Ninh". Then, in 2023, surpassing hundreds of contestants across the province, Anh Thu continued to win first prize at the Quang Binh Province Youth Singing Contest. The piece Thu chose to perform in the final night was "Co gai vot thorn" - a song that has "nailed" the names of many generations of famous artists. For Thu, it was both a pressure and a challenge worth conquering. And indeed, she conquered the judges and the audience with her rare voice and confident, steady performance style.
In early 2024, Tran Anh Thu continued to reach out to the "big sea" when she registered to participate in the "shining with music" contest organized by the Hue Academy of Music. A big playground means many challenges but also open opportunities if successfully conquered. The song that has accompanied the years "Hello Liberation Army, Hello Great Spring Victory" performed by the 15-year-old girl in the final night left a strong impression on the audience with her clear, high-pitched voice. Tran Anh Thu excellently won first prize and was directly admitted to the Hue Academy of Music.
When the first Quang Binh singing contest in 2024 was held, among nearly 50 contestants, Tran Anh Thu was a bright name. Right in the final night, when the contestants sang together to the immortal song by musician Hoang Van "Quang Binh, my hometown", Tran Anh Thu stood out with her pure appearance, bright stage and professional performance style. As expected by many people, she once again won the championship of the contest with the song "Canh chim bao tin vui". It was not a surprising result but made those who loved her voice burst into joy. At that time, many tears fell because of happiness and pride.
The road is long and full of challenges.
Starting the 2024 summer vacation, Tran Anh Thu went to Hanoi to prepare for the entrance exam to the Vocal Music Department of the Vietnam National Academy of Music. Meeting many friends with the same passion, Thu realized that the gap between students from the provinces and big cities is still quite large due to the lack of conditions for intensive music study from a young age. "I am assessed to have a good voice and good musical ability, but my ability to notate music is still limited. To catch up with my friends in big cities, I have to try harder," Anh Thu shared.
During her exam preparation in Hanoi, Anh Thu was fortunate to meet Meritorious Artist Thu Lan, former Head of the Vocal Department of the Vietnam National Academy of Music. Recognizing the rare talent of the girl born in the sandy region of Quang Binh, she encouraged Anh Thu to confidently choose to follow the path of professional art. That encouragement came at the right time when she needed future career orientation, Anh Thu decided to pursue her dream of becoming a professional singer and was fully supported by her family.
These days, Anh Thu is anxiously waiting for the results of the entrance exam to the Vietnam National Academy of Music. But deep in the eyes of the 15-year-old girl are worries "before her age". Thu said that her family is not very well off, so studying music in depth will certainly encounter many financial difficulties. "But the more difficult it is, the more motivation I have to study hard to win a scholarship, to share some of the difficulties with my parents. There will be many challenges ahead, but I will not give up because of that", Thu confided, in the eyes of the "lark" shining a strong determination.
