At this time, on the fruit-growing hillsides of Sop Cop district, cooperatives and individual producers are focusing on caring for and controlling pests and diseases affecting their crops, ensuring high yields and product quality.
Muong Va commune has 590 hectares of oranges, tangerines, mangoes, and longan, of which 166 hectares are already producing fruit. Guided by specialized agencies, the people in the commune are caring for the oranges and tangerines according to VietGAP standards to ensure product quality and meet customer requirements. Mr. Vi Van Huong, from Nghe Ven village, shared: "My family grows nearly 3 hectares of Vinh oranges, Chum tangerines, and Na Mon oranges. Currently, we are caring for the trees and preventing anthracnose and stem rot. In the 2022 season, my family harvested nearly 20 tons of various fruits, earning 400 million VND. This year, we aim for a yield 10-15% higher than last year."
The Toan Duyen Agricultural Cooperative in Sop Cop commune has over 30 hectares of land planted with grafted oranges, tangerines, and mangoes using organic farming methods. The cooperative's products have been certified to VietGAP standards, with an average annual harvest of 80 tons of fruit. Mr. Tong Van Toan, the cooperative's director, said: "Immediately after harvesting the previous crop, the cooperative members focused on caring for the trees and controlling pests and diseases. To prevent rapid water loss during hot weather and reduce weeding labor, the cooperative used tarpaulin covers around the base of the trees and provided technical advice to farmers on planting and caring for fruit trees using organic methods to improve product quality."
Currently, Sop Cop district has over 2,170 hectares of fruit trees, mainly mangoes, longan, plums, oranges, tangerines, and hawthorn, concentrated mainly in the communes of Muong Va, Muong Lan, Nam Lanh, and Sop Cop... Of which, over 1,800 hectares are already producing fruit, yielding over 2,700 tons per year. The entire district maintains 12 safe agricultural product supply chains; over 40 hectares are cultivated organically according to VietGAP standards. In addition, the district has 24 agricultural cooperatives participating in production linkages and product distribution with households.
According to the experience and fruit tree care techniques of cooperatives and individual producers, for citrus trees, when young fruits reach a diameter of 1 cm or more, it is necessary to thin out the number of fruits on the tree to suit its age, removing any damaged fruits. For grafted mangoes, longan, and other fruit trees, 3-4 weeks after fruit set, it is necessary to fertilize and bag the fruits with specialized bags to prevent fruit fly damage, fungal diseases, and other fruit-damaging diseases.
Mr. Vi Van Dinh, Deputy Head of the District's Agriculture and Rural Development Department, said: "Since the beginning of the year, the Department has coordinated with the District's Agricultural Services Center and other units to organize 7 training courses on thinning orchards, grafting, planting and caring for newly planted fruit trees for over 200 people. At the same time, we have advised people to implement safe production processes, use only fertilizers and pesticides on the permitted list; and control anthracnose disease in grafted mangoes and stem borers in old citrus fruit trees. Currently, nearly 700 hectares of mangoes, over 500 hectares of oranges, tangerines, and pomelos, and over 450 hectares of hawthorn trees in the district are developing well, with a high fruit setting rate."
In addition, Sop Cop district is stepping up the promotion and introduction of products and trade promotion to expand the market for product consumption. The goal is that by 2025, the district will have 55 hectares of fruit trees grown according to VietGAP, GlobalGAP, 4C, UTZ and equivalent standards; 60 hectares applying water-saving irrigation systems and using fabric mulch to cover the roots; 5 hectares using greenhouses and net houses; and 5 agricultural cooperatives using high technology in one or more stages of production and processing.
With proactive care and the application of scientific and technical methods to production at the right time and season, it is believed that this year's fruit crop in Sop Cop district will bring high income to households.
