A statement posted on the Swedish government 's website on May 28 read: "Ukraine will use €2.5 billion from a European Union (EU) loan to purchase 20 Gripen E/F multirole fighter jets. We also plan to donate 16 Gripen C/D aircraft as a form of bilateral assistance."
In a social media post on the same day, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson published a photo of himself and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the signing ceremony for the Gripen fighter jet purchase contract.

According to the military website Army Recognition, the JAS 39 Gripen E version, piloted by a single pilot, is 15.2m long; has a wingspan of 8.6m; and is 4.5m high. The aircraft has an empty and maximum takeoff weight of 8 tons and 16.5 tons, respectively. The JAS 39E is equipped with a General Electric F414-GE-39E turbofan engine with an average thrust of 64 Kilo Newtons (kN), allowing it to reach a maximum speed of up to 2,100 km/h. The maximum range of the JAS 39E is approximately 4,000 km.

The JAS 39E is equipped with a Raven ES-05 radar capable of detecting enemy fighter aircraft at a maximum distance of 300km.
In terms of weaponry, the JAS 39E is equipped with a 27mm Mauser BK-27 cannon with 120 rounds of ammunition. The fuselage and wings are fitted with 8 hardpoints, capable of carrying over 5 tons of weapons, from bombs to air-to-air missiles such as IRIS-T, AIM-9; GBU-12 guided bombs… depending on the pilot's mission.
