Can people with kidney disease drink coffee?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên19/12/2024

"Could you please tell me what the symptoms of kidney failure are? Is it okay to drink coffee if you have kidney failure? Thank you, doctor!" (H. Nhien, Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City).

Dr. Duong Thi Thanh Tam, Head of the Nephrology and Hemodialysis Unit at Gia An 115 Hospital, answers: Regarding the symptoms of kidney failure, we can differentiate them as follows:

While acute kidney failure presents with dramatic symptoms due to the sudden loss of kidney function (such as oliguria, anuria, edema, back and lumbar pain, nausea and vomiting, fatigue, poor appetite, etc.), chronic kidney disease (chronic renal failure) usually progresses silently, with patients showing almost no warning signs in the early stages. Symptoms often appear late, when the disease has reached the end stage, which is why chronic kidney disease is often considered a "silent killer".

Patients with chronic kidney disease do not need to completely avoid coffee, but they should pay attention to the amount they consume.

Regular health checkups and screenings for chronic kidney disease are crucial for early detection, especially for those in high-risk groups.

Chronic kidney disease should be considered, and you should see a doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms: foamy urine; edema – possibly subtle swelling such as feeling tight around rings or shoes; back pain; frequent dizziness; pale skin; fatigue; and drowsiness. Young people with high blood pressure should pay particular attention to kidney disease; women who have had preeclampsia; and those who frequently take painkillers should also be wary of chronic kidney disease.

Patients with kidney failure need to take note.

For people with kidney disease, proper nutrition plays a crucial role as it helps control blood pressure, weight, cholesterol, and blood sugar, thereby slowing disease progression.

Patients with chronic kidney disease should pay special attention to reducing salt intake, limiting certain fruits and vegetables rich in potassium, and restricting stimulants such as chili peppers, black pepper, onions, and garlic in their diet. They should avoid processed foods such as canned and smoked foods; and should not eat pickled foods or mushrooms. They should also avoid alcohol, beer, and mineral water high in sodium.

Patients with chronic kidney disease do not need to completely abstain from coffee, but they should pay attention to the amount they drink to control potassium levels and avoid high blood pressure (due to the effects of caffeine in coffee). In addition, they should limit or avoid adding cream and milk to their coffee.

It is best for people with chronic kidney disease to see a doctor for detailed advice on a diet and lifestyle suitable for their condition.
