In an interview with Sputnik regarding the upgraded T-80BVM tanks being used in the Special Military Operation, an officer codenamed "Fifth" from the 1st Guards Tank Army stated that the T-80BVM is like a "flying tank" and has proven its capabilities on the battlefield.
"We've been involved in the operation in Ukraine for about four months. Our tanks are the latest upgraded T-80BVM, which deserves to be called a sharpshooter tank. Simply put, the T-80BVM allows us to fire a single bullet through a window at a distance of up to 5 km," said the "Fifth" officer.
According to Russian tank crews, the T-80BVM allows them to fire a single projectile that hits its target through a window at a distance of up to 5 km.
Another tank soldier, codenamed "Cap," said, "We call the T-80BVM the 'flying tank,' and it has proven its effectiveness in battles in special military operations zones."
"This is a fantastic vehicle, very fast thanks to its 1,250-horsepower gas turbine engine system. It is also the only Russian tank model to use this type of engine design," Cap said.
According to Russian tank crews, the T-80BVM incorporates the most modern technologies, including an advanced ballistic calculation system; all that remains is to locate and fire. No one can escape it.
The T-80BVM version was upgraded at Omsktransmash (a subsidiary of UVZ Group) through a deep modernization process of the T-80BV version that had been in service with the Soviet Union since 1985. The revised version was unveiled to the public in 2017 and entered service with the Russian army in 2019.
In terms of overall design, the upgraded T-80BVM significantly enhances firepower, protection, and mobility compared to its predecessor.
The T-80BVM features improved Relikt explosive reactive armor, equivalent to that of the T-90 tanks, providing protection against parallel warheads and reducing the penetration power of APFSDS rounds by more than 50%.
The T-80BVM variant incorporates additional turret armor protection and UAV suppression equipment.
The tank has a combat weight of 46 tons; an overall length of 9.56m; a width of 3.38m and a height of 2.22m. The T-80BVM uses a GTD-1250TF gas turbine engine with a power of 1,250 horsepower, allowing it to travel at a maximum speed of 80km/h with a range of 500km. The tank's crew consists of 3 people: the tank commander, the driver, and the gunner.
The main armament equipped on the T-80BVM is the 125mm 2A46M-4 smoothbore cannon, which has 15-20% increased accuracy compared to the previous version, an effective range of 2-3km, and armor penetration of approximately 590-630mm at a distance of 2,000m.
The T-80BVM can carry 45 rounds of ammunition and missiles for its main gun with an automatic loading system. If the system malfunctions, soldiers can switch to manual loading.
Tanks can also fire 9M119 Refleks anti-tank missiles using Tandem warhead technology. The semi-automatic laser-guided missile has a claimed hit probability of 80% at 4,000m and 70% at 5,000m. With a firing rate of 6-8 rounds per minute and a range of 4-5km, the missile is fully capable of engaging low-flying helicopters.
