Writer Barbara Kingsolver and her work Demon Copperhead

As the acclaimed author of The Poisonwood Bible and The Bean Trees , Barbara Kingsolver has written a wonderful novel that captivates, compels, and captures the hearts of readers as it evokes a young hero's unforgettable coming-of-age journey.

Set in the southern Appalachian mountains, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a single mother in her teens in a trailer, with no assets other than his dead father's good looks and copper-colored hair, a vicious wit, and a natural talent for survival.

Narrated by an uncompromising voice, Demon bravely confronts modern-day perils like foster care, child labor, abandoned schools, the pressures of athletic success, addiction, disastrous love, and devastating loss. Through it all, Demon ponders his own invisibility in a pop culture where even superheroes abandon the rural folk for the big cities.

In the 19th century, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his own experiences as a survivor of institutionalized poverty and its toll on children in his society.

In transposing an epic Victorian novel into the contemporary American South, Barbara Kingsolver evokes Dickens's anger and compassion. But above all, her belief in the transformative power of a good story.

Demon Copperhead represents a new generation of lost boys - those born into places that are supposed to be rich and beautiful but are cursed and they can't imagine being left behind.

Barbara Kingsolver is the author of 10 best-selling works of fiction, including the novels: Unsheltered, Flight Behavior, The Lacuna, The Poisonwood Bible, Animal Dreams, The Bean Trees … as well as collections of poetry and essays.

Kingsolver lives with her family on a farm in southern Appalachia.
