Isak has yet to make an appearance in the Premier League during the 2025/26 season. |
The Swedish striker joined "The Kop" from Newcastle on the last day of the transfer window for a record fee in English football – £125 million. However, he hasn't played an official match since the final round of last season and has only featured for a mere 18 minutes for the Swedish national team in the recent international break.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot explained his decision to leave Isak out of the squad: “He missed the pre-season, about three to four months of training with the team. Now we have to rebuild his fitness from scratch, while the schedule is very busy. It’s a challenge, but Isak didn’t come here just to play for a few weeks, he’s on a six-year contract. We need patience.”
The Dutch coach also thanked Sweden's national team coach Jon Dahl Tomasson for "protecting" Isak during the recent matches: "He has one of the best strikers in the world at his disposal, but he skillfully restrained him to avoid the risk of injury. Not every coach is willing to do that."
Slot also advised Liverpool fans not to expect Isak to immediately play the full 90 minutes in every game. Instead, the club will gradually integrate him into the team, depending on his fitness and tactical requirements.
In the match against Burnley at 8 PM on September 14th, Liverpool maintained the same lineup that defeated Arsenal 1-0 in the previous round, with new signing Hugo Ekipike continuing to lead the attack.
