According to statistics from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam ( Ministry of Construction ), in the first 6 months of 2025 (from December 16, 2024 to June 15, 2025), domestic aviation activities continue to maintain a high level of safety.
49 bird strikes in the airspace
However, there were still some notable developments. Bird collisions in the airstrip area increased sharply with 49 cases. Incidents of flying objects that did not directly affect flight operations increased by 59 cases. Vehicle collisions with equipment, infrastructure, and people increased by 6 cases. Aircraft being hit by laser lights increased by 24 cases, although no serious consequences were reported.
Accordingly, this agency requested Van Don International Airport and Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) to direct airports to evaluate the bird collision incident index in the safety index of the port operator; at the same time, deploy enhanced solutions to effectively control risks.
Units are required to review records related to bird, wildlife and livestock control at the airport; and at the same time propose to the Civil Aviation Authority the necessary contents to implement aviation information announcements related to bird activities at the airport and surrounding areas.
Airlines continue to fully and promptly report bird-aircraft collision incidents to airport operators, the Civil Aviation Authority and Airport Authority in accordance with regulations.
The Northern, Central and Southern Airports Authorities direct airports to closely coordinate with port operators to organize control and repel birds, wild animals and livestock. At the same time, it is necessary to strengthen inspection, supervision and urging the implementation of these measures to ensure absolute flight safety.
Many catastrophic aviation accidents have resulted from aircraft hitting birds.
The most recent incident occurred on December 29, 2024, when a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 (South Korea) was preparing to land at Muan City Airport when it collided with a bird, causing the landing gear to be unable to lower. As a result, the plane slid on its belly on the runway before crashing into a concrete antenna at the end of the runway and exploding. The incident killed 179 people on board, with only two flight attendants sitting at the back of the plane surviving.
Just a few days earlier, on December 25, 2024, an Embraer E190 operated by Azerbaijan Airlines (Azerbaijan) carrying 67 people en route from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Grozny, Russia, hit a bird, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing at Aktau Airport, Kazakhstan. However, the plane later crashed, killing 38 people, including the two pilots.
On September 15, 1988, an Ethiopian Airlines flight taking off from Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, crashed into a flock of pigeons shortly after leaving the runway. Many birds were sucked into the No. 2 engine, causing the plane to lose control.
Although the pilot attempted to return to the airport for an emergency landing, the plane failed to gain altitude and crashed into a nearby field. The accident killed 35 of the 104 people on board.
