NDO - On January 14 and 15, in Hanoi, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinated with the Ministry of Health to organize a multi-sectoral conference on drug resistance prevention and control with the theme: Sharing data - Leading the future.
The conference aims to contribute to improving policies, sharing experiences in preventing and combating drug resistance, promoting the application of information technology, and proposing innovative solutions in antibiotic management and prevention and combating drug resistance.
Speaking at the conference, Dr. Nguyen Van Long, Director of the Department of Animal Health ( Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development ), said that over the past years, the Government has had many very clear policies on the prevention and control of antibiotic resistance (drug resistance), typically the National Strategy on Prevention and Control of Drug Resistance in Vietnam for the period 2023-2030, with a vision to 2045. This is an important milestone demonstrating the synchronous and effective coordination of ministries, departments and branches, especially the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Ministry of Health and the support of international organizations.
Previously, the sectors have coordinated to develop and implement plans to prevent and combat drug resistance, including the National Action Program on Drug Resistance Prevention and Control for the period 2021-2025 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
According to Mr. Long, in the recent past, the management of antibiotic use and the implementation of solutions to prevent and combat drug resistance have achieved many results. However, in the next phase, the parties also need to coordinate to continue implementing the goals set out in the Strategy.
According to the assessment, although the strategy for preventing and combating antibiotic resistance has been issued, there has been attention and direction from the Government, and the participation of ministries, branches and localities. However, the work of preventing and combating antibiotic resistance in Vietnam has just begun and there are still many issues that need to be frankly acknowledged and the plan needs to be gradually completed to coordinate implementation from the stage of production management, antibiotic use in livestock, aquaculture, processing and stages and steps of agricultural production.
Over the years, information and propaganda activities have been widely deployed, but the awareness of the political system and the community on the issue of preventing and combating drug resistance, and using drugs rationally and effectively still raises many big questions that need to be resolved in the future. Thus, Mr. Long believes that the role of communication and raising awareness needs to be promoted.
"In 2025 and the following years, we emphasize the importance of human issues from the central to local levels, in which the implementation role of localities is extremely necessary. Therefore, building the capacity of the system from equipment to people, monitoring and warning systems is really necessary. This issue does not stop at drug use and prevention and control of drug resistance but is also related to the agricultural production chain, livestock, aquaculture...", Mr. Long shared.
In addition, the leader of the Department of Animal Health also emphasized the need for multi-sectoral coordination and support from the international community in implementing the Strategy on prevention and control of drug resistance in the coming time.
Mr. Nguyen Trong Khoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management (Ministry of Health), said that drug resistance is a health threat to human development, requiring urgent, multi-sectoral action to achieve sustainable development goals.
The World Health Organization has declared that antibiotic resistance is one of the 10 global public health threats facing humanity. The misuse and abuse of drugs is a factor leading to the development of drug-resistant bacteria.
Mr. Khoa further emphasized that in some remote areas, there has been a situation where children are infected with new-generation antibiotic-resistant bacteria strains. This is an alarming situation, requiring close cooperation from many sides, first of all the agricultural, environmental and medical facilities, to prevent and limit the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Vietnam is learning from the experiences of other countries and international organizations to establish a database system on antibiotic resistance and antibiotic use, especially data in health and epidemiology. Collecting data on antibiotic use will help authorities monitor, evaluate and propose effective intervention solutions, aiming to control antibiotic resistance in Vietnam in a sustainable manner.
