Increasing competitiveness for durian industry

Việt NamViệt Nam08/07/2024

In 2024, Vietnam's durian products aim to achieve an export turnover of about 3 billion USD. The main export market is currently China and this product is facing fierce competition, so it is necessary to stabilize output and improve quality to increase the competitiveness of Vietnam's durian in the coming time.

According to the Import-Export Department ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ), Vietnam is a supply market. fresh durian 2nd largest for China. In the first 4 months of 2024, China sharply increased its import of fresh durian from the Vietnamese market, reaching 79.3 thousand tons, worth 369.8 million USD, up 91% in volume and 81.9% in value over the same period in 2023; accounting for 39.2% of the total volume of fresh durian imported by China.

Vietnamese durian is considered to have the advantage of abundant output, harvested all year round. In addition, the shipping time to China is faster than other countries, so the price is also more competitive. These are the factors that help Vietnamese durian make great strides in the Chinese market after less than two years of signing the Official Export Protocol. Durian is also the main export fruit in the structure of Vietnam's export fruit, so it is contributing a large part of the export value of the entire fruit and vegetable industry.

Show room durian export Vietnam's entry into the Chinese market is still very large. Statistics from the Chinese Customs Department show that in the first four months of 2024, China's fresh durian imports reached 202.5 thousand tons, worth 1.09 billion USD. The average imported fresh durian price in the first four months of 2024 reached 5,394.6 USD/ton, up 4.9% over the same period in 2023. Thailand is the largest fresh durian supplier to China. However, in the first four months of 2024, China's fresh durian imports from this market decreased sharply. The share of fresh durian imports from Thailand in the first four months of 2024 fell to 60% of total imports, down 26.7 percentage points from the same period in 2023. Although Thai durian exports to China fell during this period due to heat and drought affecting harvest output, Thailand is currently working on many solutions to this problem, so output may improve soon.

According to the Import-Export Department, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand is taking measures to support durian farmers in the eastern part of Thailand as the drought continues. The Royal Irrigation Department of Thailand is responsible for supplying water to farms, while the Department of Agricultural Extension has been asked to provide guidance to help farmers cope with the drought conditions.

Faced with that reality, to increase Vietnam's durian market share in China, the durian industry needs to focus on stabilizing output and product quality. Chairman of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association Nguyen Thanh Binh said that in order to manage product quality, functional agencies and local specialized agencies need to step in to monitor the implementation of the production process, from input materials to care, harvesting, etc.; strictly manage to prevent competition in buying and selling that disrupts the market; at the same time, check and supervise the issuance and use of growing area codes and packaging facility codes correctly and effectively; speed up investment in logistics infrastructure in concentrated production areas, transit hubs, seaports, airports, border gates, etc. to improve storage, preservation, and transportation capacity, reduce the rate of damaged goods, and reduce pressure on the crop season and the consumption market.

In addition, the demand for processed durian is increasing in China due to its more affordable price compared to fresh durian, so we need to quickly promote the signing of the Protocol on official export of frozen durian to China to exploit this potential segment.

Regarding the market issue, Le Huu Phuc, Commercial Counselor of the Vietnam Trade Office in Thailand, said: Thailand's durian season starts earlier than Vietnam's, usually from January, February to June, while Vietnam's season is from late March, early April and lasts until August. Therefore, businesses should pay attention and take advantage of the seasonality to plan to export durian to China, reducing competition with Thai durian in this market.

In recent years, the area of durian cultivation nationwide has continuously increased, from nearly 32,000 hectares in 2015 to nearly 151,000 hectares in 2023. Durian output has also increased year by year, reaching nearly 1.2 million tons in 2023, while in 2015 it was only about 366,000 tons. Durian export value increased from 29.2 million USD in 2016 to 420 million USD in 2022 and in 2023 reached nearly 2.3 billion USD.
