Sumitomo Group plans to invest in Van Phong 2 LNG Power Plant in Khanh Hoa

Sumitomo Group plans to invest in the Van Phong 2 LNG Power Plant in Dong Ninh Hoa ward and offshore wind power projects in Khanh Hoa province.

Mr. Tran Quoc Nam, Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee, recently received and worked with Sumitomo Group and Van Phong Power Company Limited (investor of Van Phong 1 BOT Thermal Power Plant).

At the meeting, Mr. Shuichiro Ikemoto, Director of International Energy Solutions Division No. 2 - Sumitomo Corporation and Mr. Nguyen The Vinh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Van Phong Power Company Limited informed the leaders of the Provincial People's Committee about the operation of Van Phong 1 BOT Thermal Power Plant.

Accordingly, Van Phong 1 BOT Thermal Power Plant has officially been put into operation since January 2024 with a total capacity of 1,320 MW, contributing VND 1,107 billion to the local budget, contributing to providing 6.75 million MWh. In the first 6 months of 2025, the revenue of Van Phong 1 BOT Thermal Power Plant reached VND 9,240 billion, contributing more than VND 506 billion to the local budget.

Sumitomo Group leaders also shared about the investment orientation of the Van Phong 2 LNG Power Plant in Dong Ninh Hoa ward and offshore wind power projects; at the same time, expressed their hope that provincial leaders would pay attention and support the enterprise in proposing to the Central agency to consider the implementation of the project.

Speaking at the meeting, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Tran Quoc Nam emphasized that Vietnam and Japan have a strategic cooperative relationship in many fields. The new Khanh Hoa province after the merger between Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan provinces has opened up a huge development space, creating opportunities for businesses to learn and invest.

Mr. Nam highly appreciated the contributions of Sumitomo Group to the socio -economic development of the locality; at the same time, he acknowledged the Group's opinions and proposals on investing in new energy projects in Khanh Hoa.

According to Mr. Nam, Khanh Hoa province has identified energy as one of the important sectors, prioritizing investment attraction to develop the local economy. In addition, Khanh Hoa province has enough potential to develop LNG power by 2030.

Therefore, Khanh Hoa province always prioritizes creating favorable conditions for investors, especially strategic investors like Sumitomo, to explore investment opportunities in new energy projects. The Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee also hopes that Sumitomo Group will continue to research and invest in new projects in Khanh Hoa.
