Recently, the Department of Telecommunications (Ministry of Information and Communications, Ministry of Information and Communications) said that from March 1, 2024, 2G technology phones not on the list of certified conformity announced by the Ministry of Information and Communications will not be allowed to connect to mobile networks.
Users can look up 2G devices at: https://tqc.gov.vn/2g-only.
This activity aims to orientate the cessation of 2G mobile technology, popularize smartphones to promote digital economy , digital society and implement the roadmap to stop old mobile technology, implement the program "one smartphone per person"...
However, this has caused some difficulties for some users of 2G phones. Mr. Le Hung Thuan, the owner of a passenger transport fleet in Ho Chi Minh City, said that at the end of last year, the network operator announced that it would cut off the signal on 2G phones. This will cause him some difficulties.
"Nokia brick phones like 1202 or 1280 are very convenient for making calls, saving numbers and avoiding theft or loss thanks to their low price. I know the 1280 series will still be used, but I don't know if the phone I'm using meets the standards because I bought it from someone else. If the signal is cut off, it could cause a lot of inconvenience in the near future," said Mr. Thuan.

Similarly, Ms. Nguyen Ha Bon, owner of a Quang noodle shop in Thu Duc City, said that because she is 65 years old, she cannot learn how to use a smartphone because it is complicated and difficult to remember. If the mobile network on her 2G phone is cut off, she does not know how to handle receiving orders from customers over the phone.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Thai, owner of Keyphone store in Thu Duc City, said cutting off the signal of phones that only support 2G technology not only causes difficulties for businesses but also affects consumers who do not have knowledge about smartphones.
Mr. Thai said that cheap 2G phones from 350,000 - 750,000 VND are popular with many manual workers because they are easy to maintain and repair, and don't regret losing them... but most importantly, they are easy to use.
"If the signal is cut off now, they will have to buy another phone that costs several million VND more. However, not everyone has the money, and more importantly, there are very few 2G phones on the market, most 2G phones today are assembled from separate components. I don't know if those phones will be banned, or if they are banned, how will the elderly make calls?" - Mr. Thai said.
According to the network operators, phones that only support 2G waves will be cut off and will not be able to make calls. Users need to switch to smartphones to continue using the calling service. However, the implementation will only start on March 1, users should contact after this date to continue to receive support.
