US warship attacked

“ We are aware of reports of attacks on the USS Carney and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and will provide additional information shortly,” the Pentagon said.

The US Department of Defense did not specify damage to the USS Carney, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, in the attack.

The US Department of Defense also said that US officials have not yet identified the perpetrator of the December 3 attack.

Yemen's Houthi forces said they attacked two Israeli-linked ships with drones and missiles. However, the Houthis have not admitted targeting the US Navy ship.

This is the latest in a series of maritime attacks on shipping lanes in the region linked to the Israel-Hamas war.

Earlier, the UK Maritime Trade Control Authority said it had received information about drone attacks in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait of the Red Sea. According to the agency, drones originating from Yemen were operating in the area.

A series of maritime attacks have been reported in Middle Eastern waters as fighting flares between Israel and Hamas, raising the risk of a wider regional conflict. Last month, the Houthis seized an Israeli-linked shipping vessel in the Red Sea, off the coast of Yemen.

The Houthis have fired ballistic missiles and armed drones at Israeli targets and have vowed to continue targeting Israeli ships in the area.

Yahya Saree, a spokesman for the Houthis, claimed responsibility for the attacks on December 3. “All Israeli ships or those linked to Israelis will become legitimate targets,” he said.

The USS Carney shot down an Iranian-made drone that was headed toward its location from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen, according to the Navy Times . The incident also came a day after another Iranian drone approached the aircraft carrier Dwight Eisenhower in international waters of the Arabian Gulf, the Navy Times said.
