The Independent newspaper reported on March 10 that the Royal Navy's aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth had just caught fire while it was anchored awaiting repairs, the second time the ship had encountered problems recently.

The incident happened on the morning of March 9 (local time) when the aircraft carrier was docked in the Glenmalan area in Scotland.

A Royal Navy spokesman said the "small, isolated fire" was brought under control and quickly extinguished.

There were no reports of injuries and no explosives were involved. Authorities are determining the cause of the fire.

Previously, the Independent reported on February 5 that the aircraft carrier had to withdraw from a NATO exercise after a problem occurred in the coupling between the propeller shaft and the gearbox.

HMS Prince of Wales then took its place, taking part in NATO's largest exercise Steadfast Defender in nearly half a century.

The HMS Prince of Wales itself had its own problems 18 months earlier, when it broke down off the Isle of Wight after sailing to the US. It also had problems with the coupling on its starboard propeller.

The aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth is currently en route to Rosyth in Scotland for repairs.

The incident comes as the British government faces questions about the effectiveness of its nuclear deterrent, following a failed test launch of a Trident II nuclear missile on January 30, which sent the missile hurtling back into the sea near the submarine that fired it.

An unarmed Trident II missile was launched from the nuclear-powered submarine HMS Vanguard, as part of final trials following a £500m overhaul, before the ship returns to patrol duty.
