Warm the hearts of the poor

Moving into her new house, Mrs. Hôil Thị Giéec in Aról village, Lang commune could not hide her joy. She took care of every little corner, arranging things neatly. When meeting anyone who came to visit, she excitedly showed off her dream home - the result of the temporary housing elimination program.

“The old house was built more than 20 years ago and is badly damaged. The bamboo walls have been replaced several times but the wind still blows and the rain still blows. I want to repair it, but I am old, weak, and my income from the farm is unstable, so I have to give up.

When the commune officials came to survey and put it on the list of those eligible for support to remove temporary houses in 2025, I was very happy. Even happier was that the villagers and local youth joined hands to dismantle the old houses, clear the ground, and transport materials," said Ms. Giéec.

The new house is about 40 square meters , meeting the “3 hard” standards (hard foundation, hard wall frame, hard roof) with a total cost of 60 million VND. Although not spacious, this warm home is full of love, enough for Mrs. Giéec to live out her old age with peace of mind.

Also in Arol village, Alang Prac’s family has just completed a house after many years of struggling to live in makeshift conditions. As a poor household, he has saved up but still cannot afford to repair the low floor of the house, which is often flooded during the rainy season. Rice and household items must be placed high to avoid mold and damage.

“With the support of 30 million VND from the State, I re-tiled the floor and repaired the walls to make them stronger. Now I no longer have to worry about the rain, I can work with peace of mind and take care of my children's education,” Mr. Prac shared.

Settling down and making a living

In 2023, after screening, Ms. Alang Thi Phao's family was selected by Lang commune authorities to be included in the list of people receiving 60 million VND in support to build a new house.

Immediately after completing the house, determined to escape poverty, Ms. Phao boldly borrowed an additional 50 million VND from the Tay Giang District Social Policy Bank to buy breeding cows and pigs. After only one year, the livestock reproduced, bringing a stable source of income. At the end of 2024, Ms. Phao's family was removed from the commune's list of poor households.

“When the government helps, we have to know how to seize the opportunity, we cannot wait or depend on it. With a new house, my husband and I are more aware of building happiness, working hard, learning to save, and calculating for the future. Now our lives have changed dramatically,” Ms. Phao confided.

According to Mr. Bhling Mien - Chairman of Lang Commune People's Committee, in the period of 2023 - 2025, the whole commune has 82 households supported to remove temporary houses, including 59 newly built houses and 23 repaired houses, with a total cost of more than 4.23 billion VND. Up to now, 59 houses have been completed and handed over to poor households, 1 house to a meritorious person; the remaining are under urgent construction.

Eliminating temporary houses helps the locality solve the problem of unsafe housing conditions for poor households and policy families. From the support capital of 60 million VND for new construction and 30 million VND for repairs, many households have proactively borrowed more or used their savings to build solid, spacious houses. Local organizations and people also join hands to support working days, helping people reduce construction costs.

“More importantly, after having stable housing, many households have raised their awareness of working and production, making efforts to escape poverty. Of the 59 poor households that have received support to eliminate temporary housing, more than 70% have escaped poverty sustainably. According to the survey, by the end of 2025, this rate will reach 100%,” said Mr. Mien.

Tay Giang District People's Committee said that in the period of 2023 - 2025, the locality aims to eliminate 1,067 temporary houses, including 846 newly built houses and 221 repaired houses, with a total support budget of nearly 57.4 billion VND. To date, the whole district has handed over 679 houses, the remaining number is being accelerated.

Mr. Mac Nhu Phuong - Acting Chairman of Tay Giang District People's Committee said that eliminating temporary houses is a correct policy, in line with the people's wishes, clearly demonstrating the responsibility and concern of the Party and State for the poor and disadvantaged people facing housing difficulties.

Thanks to this policy, hundreds of households have had a solid home, can work and produce with peace of mind, and strive to stabilize their lives. Tay Giang strives to have basically no households living in temporary or dilapidated houses by the end of 2025.
