Thailand's goal at the 33rd SEA Games is to win gold medals in both men's and women's football. To achieve this goal, FAT announced that it would suspend the Thai League competition program for 1 month. However, the football governing body of the Golden Temple country has faced strong opposition. Many clubs disagree with this issue.
They said that the domestic competition program is already dense with 9 months of continuous competition on 3 fronts (Thai League, League Cup and FA Cup). If postponed for 1 month, the 2025/26 season will last up to 10 months, making many teams tired.
In particular, top clubs such as Buriram, Pathum United, Bangkok United will have a hard time because they have to work hard in the international arena. Representatives of the 16 teams all agreed on the plan not to postpone the National Championship to make way for the SEA Games.

Clubs find it difficult to give in to U22 Thailand competing at SEA Games 33 |
The moves from the clubs show that Thailand is having difficulty in its plan to regain the No. 1 position in SEA Games football. They have failed in the last 3 editions. In 2019, U22 Thailand could not even get past the group stage. In 2021 and 2023, they lost in the finals. Never before in the history of the SEA Games has the land of the golden pagoda been unable to win the men's football gold medal for 3 consecutive editions like now.
As the host, Thailand is very determined this year. They consider the football gold medal as a natural task. But unlike Vietnam or Indonesia, which postponed the National Championship during the Games, it is very likely that Thailand will not be able to carry out this task, making it very difficult for them to have the optimal force for the tournament.
In order to find a common voice with the clubs, FAT proposed a plan not to postpone the tournament but all teams must commit to releasing members to the national team if called. However, they encountered difficulties when the teams announced that the Federation could not call up more than 3 members per club. Certainly, the host country will face many difficulties if it wants to call up the optimal force for the tournament at the end of the year.
