According to a VNA correspondent in Bangkok, a number of scholars, politicians and celebrities in the performing arts world in Thailand have called on the people of this country to be vigilant against the risk of infection with the XBB.1.16 sub-variant of Omicron that causes COVID-19, especially during the traditional Songkran New Year.

Dr. Thira Woratanarat, a public health expert and lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University, highlighted the risk of COVID-19 as many people participate in water festivals and visit relatives during Songkran. He said the number of new COVID-19 cases is increasing among actors, celebrities and politicians .
Actor Natthawut “Poh” Sakidjai announced on social media that he had contracted COVID-19 with symptoms of severe sore throat and coughing up blood. Natthawut urged everyone to be more vigilant to protect themselves, as well as protect the health of elderly family members from the risk of contracting COVID-19.
Another prominent figure, Thai Civilization Party leader Mongkolkit Suksintharanon, also warned the public about the risk of spreading COVID-19 after saying he had recently been infected.
Dr. Thira said that on April 15 alone, more than 58,900 new COVID-19 cases were recorded worldwide, including 313 deaths. South Korea, France, Japan, Russia and Mexico are the five countries with the highest number of new COVID-19 cases per day in the world. Citing information from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Dr. Thira said that the Omicron XBB sub-variant causes up to 97% of new COVID-19 cases, while the XBB.1.16 sub-variant is currently of particular interest to international scientists .
