Thailand wins convincingly and unexpectedly.

The 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers feature a total of 42 teams (9 groups of 4 teams and 2 groups of 3 teams). Of these, Southeast Asia has all 11 qualifying teams, spread across 8 groups. In the first round of qualifiers, also taking place on September 6th, 10 Southeast Asian teams will play their opening matches (only Indonesia U-23 has yet to play).

Against a much weaker opponent like Guam U23, Vietnam U23 had little difficulty securing a resounding 6-0 victory and taking the lead in Group C. In the first half, Vietnam U23 played rather ineffectively and only scored one goal. The remaining five goals were scored in the second half, when coach Troussier brought on quality players. In the other Group C match, Singapore U23 lost to Yemen U23 0-3.

Ho Van Cuong contributed one goal for Vietnam U.23.

Besides Vietnam U23, Thailand U23 also had an impressive opening match in Group H. The "War Elephants" secured a surprisingly resounding 5-0 victory against the Philippines U23. Also in Group H, Malaysia U23 won 2-0 against Bangladesh U23.

The U23 Laos (Group I) and U23 Brunei (Group A) teams suffered the heaviest defeats in the first round of the 2024 U23 Asian Cup qualifiers. U23 Laos lost 1-7 to U23 Australia, while U23 Brunei lost 0-9 to U23 Jordan. Additionally, in Group F, U23 Timor Leste lost 4-0 to U23 Kuwait.

Thailand U.23 and Malaysia U.23 both won in Group H.

U.23 Myanmar (Group B) and U.23 Cambodia (Group J) were two representatives who performed well against higher-ranked opponents. U.23 Myanmar drew with U.23 Kyrgyzstan 1-1, while U.23 Cambodia also drew with U.23 Lebanon 2-2.

The second round of matches in the 2023 AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers will all take place on September 9th. Indonesia U-23, as the host nation and in Group K (which has three teams), will play their first match against Taiwan U-23. Vietnam U-23 will have a crucial match against Yemen U-23 on September 9th.
