The 2024 AFC U-23 Championship qualifiers have a total of 42 participating teams (9 groups of 4 teams and 2 groups of 3 teams). Of which, Southeast Asia has all 11 qualifying football teams, in 8 groups. In the first round of the qualifiers, which also took place on September 6, there were 10 Southeast Asian teams playing their opening match (only U.23 Indonesia has not played yet).
Against a much weaker opponent like U.23 Guam, U.23 Vietnam did not encounter many difficulties to win a big victory with a score of 6-0 and rise to the top of Group C. U.23 Laos (Group I) and U.23 Brunei (Group A) are the two Southeast Asian teams that suffered the heaviest defeats in the first round of the 2024 AFC U.23 Championship qualifiers. U.23 Thailand and U.23 Malaysia both won in Group H
U.23 Myanmar (Group B) and U.23 Cambodia (Group J) are the two representatives who performed well against opponents who were rated higher. U.23 Myanmar held U.23 Kyrgyzstan to a 1-1 draw. Meanwhile, U.23 Cambodia also drew with U.23 Lebanon when the two teams tied 2-2.
The second round of the 2023 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers will take place on September 9. Indonesia U23 is the host and is in Group K with 3 teams, so they will compete from the second round, against Taiwan U23. Vietnam U23 will have a pivotal match against Yemen U23 on September 9.
