The healing sounds of piano and cello

The album "Walking in Silence" by Cuong Tong and Tran Hong Nhung is a subtle dialogue between piano and cello, opening up a tranquil space for listeners to confront and soothe their souls.

On the evening of May 29th, musician Cuong Tong officially released his album Walking in Silence , marking his collaboration with cellist Tran Hong Nhung.

The album comprises nine tracks: Moonlight Spring, Dreaming Stars, All The Things I Love About You, Take My Hand, If Only, Lonely Valentine, Empty, Goodbye My Love, and Meaning of Life . Each song acts as a chapter in memory, guiding the listener through various stages of loneliness.

Melodies written from solitary journeys.

All of Cường Tống's works were written during his 11 years living and working in Beijing (China). For an artist living far from home, nights spent walking alone around the Olympic area or the Bird's Nest stadium became a habit that healed his emotions. No music , no phone, the only sounds were his footsteps and the city lights. It was from these moments of solitary silence that the first musical notes were born.

Cuong Tong shared that some musical pieces begin with just a few piano notes hastily jotted down on his phone while on the go. Then there are cello passages that suddenly pop into his head in the middle of the night, forcing him to immediately sit down and write before the memory fades by the next morning.

Looking back on his long journey, the musician realized that all his works share a common theme: loneliness but not despair, silence but not emptiness. The title " Walking in Silence" emerged naturally as the most accurate description of that period in his life.

A dialogue between two musical personalities.

To tell the story of Walking in Silence , Cuong Tong chose to combine piano with cello. According to him, the cello is the instrument closest to the human voice because of its unique movement, both gentle and intense, both intimate and solitary. In this album, the cello doesn't play a background role but becomes a real "character," engaging in an open dialogue with the piano.

That requires players to possess both academic skill and great inner depth. That's why Cuong Tong sought out Tran Hong Nhung.

Album

The album "Walking in Silence" was released on the evening of May 29th on digital music platforms.

Cường Tống won first prize at the 2007 Autumn Concours at the age of 19, after which he received a full scholarship and spent 13 years studying and working in the competitive music environment in China. He specialized in piano, composition, arrangement, and jazz, and participated in numerous film music projects and performed with major symphony orchestras. This experience clearly shaped his cinematic musical thinking.

Meanwhile, Tran Hong Nhung was born into a family with a tradition in the arts. She began studying cello at the age of 6 under the guidance of Professor Hoang Duong, and earned dual degrees from two prestigious Russian institutions: the Tchaikovsky National Conservatory and the Gnesin National Academy of Music. She is also the only Vietnamese cellist to have held the position of Concertmaster at the Asian Youth Orchestra.

However, what brought them together wasn't their achievements. Cuong Tong sought restraint, subtlety, and a somewhat solitary depth in Hong Nhung's piano playing.

Find a moment of peace amidst the noise.

Cuong Tong said that the album recording process lasted nearly three years. Some sections of the music weren't technically complex, but it was very difficult to maintain the right spirit. The artist had to sustain very long, thin notes and absolutely could not overact. Just a little extra emotion would cause the original solitude of the work to disappear.

There were days when they would only record a few lines and then stop to listen, or songs they thought were finished would have to be recorded again from the beginning because they felt they "haven't quite hit the mark."

In a fast-paced music market heavily reliant on algorithms and social media trends, the fact that two young artists spent years working on an album of cello and piano instrumental music is a rare feat.

Walking in Silence is not a product for quick entertainment. It requires listeners to slow down, to use their life experiences to feel the sounds that were written to be understood.

The album title is open to many interpretations: " Walking Silently Amidst Humanity," " Walking Solitarily in Silence," etc. But perhaps the closest thing to the musical world that Cuong Tong and Tran Hong Nhung create is " Walking Silently Amidst Spaces of Loneliness ." There, listeners find a fragile peace, yet deep enough to soothe their inner turmoil.
