Speaking to reporters of the Lao Dong Newspaper, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hoan, Principal of the school, said that the school name change is to carry out the political task assigned by the Ministry of Industry and Trade ; it is also in line with the orientation of multi-disciplinary and multi-field training to serve high-quality human resources for the industry and trade sector and society; and at the same time, it is in line with the vision, mission and development strategy of the school.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Food Industry - now Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade has a history dating back to 1982. At that time, the Ministry of Food Industry issued Decision 986/CNTP on the establishment of the Ho Chi Minh City School of Food Industry Economics and Technology to train and foster a team of economic and technical staff for the food industry in the South.

In 1986, it was upgraded to Ho Chi Minh City Food Industry High School to meet the training needs of skilled technical human resources in the Food Industry.

In 2001, it was upgraded to Ho Chi Minh City College of Food Industry.

In 2010, the school officially became Ho Chi Minh City University of Food Industry according to Decision No. 284/QD-TTG of the Prime Minister .
