Homeroom teachers and 12th-grade students hope that universities will soon announce their 2025 admissions plans.

Based on the subject combinations used for university entrance exams, high schools will have enough information to advise students on choosing subjects for the high school graduation exam, selecting suitable majors and universities based on their abilities and aspirations.
Refer to the old plan for the new program.
Most high schools have surveyed and allowed 12th-grade students to register for two elective subjects in the 2025 High School Graduation Examination. This information will serve as a reference for schools to proactively develop plans for organizing review and tutoring for students, ensuring the quality of the first High School Graduation Examination and university entrance exam under the 2018 General Education Program.
Among the 424 12th-grade students of Son Tra High School (Son Tra, Da Nang), 176 students registered to take the Physics exam, 89 for Chemistry, 21 for Biology, 234 for English, 1 for Korean, 1 for Japanese, 119 for History, 127 for Geography, 56 for Economics and Law Education, 11 for Industrial Technology, and 8 students chose Informatics.
Principal Bui Minh Quang stated: “The subject selection survey is only for reference; students still have the opportunity to adjust their choices until the time of submitting their application. However, the school still provides counseling to students and parents on subject selection, focusing on subjects included in the university entrance exam subject combinations. This allows students to proactively choose their options for university admission, increasing their chances of being accepted into their desired program.”
However, both teachers and 12th-grade students at Son Tra High School currently rely solely on the university's 2024 admissions plan for reference when choosing subjects related to their chosen subject combinations. "Although the 2025 admissions process is predicted to undergo many changes to align with the 2018 General Education Program, at this point, students are mostly choosing traditional subject combinations for registration because few higher education institutions have announced their admissions plans early," Mr. Quang commented.
As a homeroom teacher, Ms. Vu Thi Huong from Thai Phien High School (Da Nang) proactively seeks information about changes and adjustments in the admission process of universities and colleges in order to improve the effectiveness of career guidance and counseling for students.
"However, at this point, both teachers and students are confused about choosing two additional elective subjects because there is almost no information about the subject combinations for university admissions. Besides matching their abilities and interests, the subjects must also be aligned with their career aspirations to increase the effectiveness of the university admissions process," Ms. Huong said.
In reality, many students aiming for engineering or medical fields have chosen Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as subjects to study since grade 10. However, with the 2025 high school graduation exam plan, this group can only choose one of the two subject groups: Physics and Chemistry or Chemistry and Biology to register for the exam.
In this case, Mr. Nguyen Van Tan - Principal of Tran Cao Van High School (Tam Ky, Quang Nam) - suggested that students should be advised on alternative options such as using their high school transcripts, participating in aptitude tests, etc., to have more choices when registering their college application preferences.

Proactively anticipate future trends.
Tran Cao Van High School analyzed survey data on elective subjects for 12th-grade students to organize teaching, learning, and review sessions early on. For Mathematics and Literature, the school added one extra lesson per week from the beginning of the school year. Subject departments focused on building a question bank based on the Ministry's sample exam structure to familiarize students with the new question types.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Tan, analysis of the sample exam shows that if teachers do not change their teaching methods and students do not make an effort in studying and reviewing, it will be difficult to maintain the high school graduation exam results of previous years. Therefore, the school is strongly requiring teachers to innovate their testing and evaluation methods according to the direction of the sample exam so that students can adapt and adjust their learning methods from the beginning of the year.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Tan, the university admission plan for 2025 is expected to undergo many changes. If the high school graduation exam continues with 6 subjects as before, students registering for the Natural Sciences combined exam will have at least 7 traditional combinations to consider for admission.
Meanwhile, under the 2+2 option, candidates only have 1-2 traditional subject combinations for admission. For example, if a candidate chooses Chemistry and Biology as electives, there is only one combination: B00 (Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology). If a student chooses English and Physics, there are two combinations: D01 (Mathematics, Literature, English) and A01 (Mathematics, Physics, English). Furthermore, some subject combinations will no longer be available, for example, D90 (Mathematics, Natural Sciences, English).
Meanwhile, students who aspire to apply to top universities in fields such as Health Sciences and Business usually start preparing quite early, rather than waiting until the time to register for the high school graduation exam to begin their intensive studies.
"Therefore, students, parents, and the school all hope that universities will soon announce their university admission plans so that high schools can make timely adjustments in organizing teaching and learning, as well as develop plans for early and effective review sessions," the Principal of Tran Cao Van High School expressed.
Tran Uy, a 12th-grade student from Thai Phien High School (Da Nang), wishes to apply for admission to the Border Guard Academy. Uy stated: “I don’t know if military schools will make any adjustments to their admissions process this year. Therefore, I’m still basing my study goals on the 2024 admission criteria.”
Accordingly, Uy is striving for the upcoming city-level excellent student competition with the goal of at least winning third prize in Geography. In addition, Uy is trying to study all subjects consistently to meet the requirement of having excellent academic results for five semesters and is focusing on Literature, History, and Geography to achieve high scores in the upcoming high school graduation exam.
Son Tra High School proactively updates information related to university admissions to send to homeroom teachers for students and parents to refer to. However, according to Principal Bui Minh Quang, very few universities currently announce their admission plans early.
Meanwhile, top-tier public schools have reduced their enrollment quotas based on high school transcripts in recent years. Therefore, compared to previous years, this year's 12th-grade students are quite passive in terms of career orientation, subject selection, and university admission methods.
