The International Olympic Committee will host the Olympism365 Summit from 3 to 5 June at IOC headquarters in Lausanne. More than 250 representatives from 100 organizations from the global Olympic Movement, the United Nations and other organizations will come together to promote the UN Sustainable Development Goals through sport at the event.
Safe sport is the focus of the International Olympic Committee Summit
With the opening theme of 'Sport for a Better World ', safe sport will be a key theme on the agenda and delegates will discuss ways to end violence and support mental health and well-being at both the professional and elite levels.
“The IOC recognises the complex challenges around interpersonal violence, mental health and wellbeing, which have a direct impact on the health of athletes, individuals and communities. We believe that, as part of society, sport can be a powerful force in addressing these issues. But first, sport itself must be safe and we are working hard to lead that change,” said Kirsty Burrows, IOC deputy director of medical , medical and scientific affairs.
The IOC has taken the lead in developing safe sport policies, including supporting International Federations and National Olympic Committees to protect athletes from harassment and abuse, developing a safeguarding network and establishing a safe sport unit, which has continued to develop a comprehensive mental health action plan.
In addition, the International Olympic Committee’s Working Group on Harassment and Abuse in Sport, headed by Prince Feisal Al Hussein, now offers a number of tools and services to athletes. Just last summer, Olympic athletes at the Paris Summer Olympics benefited from the most comprehensive package of mental health and protection services ever seen at an Olympic Games, including a new cyber-abuse protection service powered by artificial intelligence.
Just a few years after these initiatives were launched, many international federations have incorporated safeguards into their organisations and the Safe Sport Hub initiative has been launched to continue providing access in some areas around the world.
“It is positive to see the progress being made, demonstrating that a holistic approach to protection is now increasingly embedded as a core responsibility within the Olympic Movement. But protection is an ongoing journey. We will continue to work in tandem with the International Federations and Olympic Movement stakeholders to enhance measures to ensure that athletes everywhere feel safe, respected and supported. We will also facilitate enhanced measures through the SafeSport Hub initiative,” said Deputy Director Kirsty Burrows.
To effectively support stakeholders in the Olympic Movement in their mental health and protection efforts, new SafeSport tools are expected to be presented and discussed in co-creation workshops at the Summit. These include the International SafeSport Framework, the International Classification and Response Framework, the Mental Health Awareness Course and the Safeguarding Focus Point Facilitator Training. The tools are designed to support early recognition of concerns and interventions, forms of care, locally appropriate responses and harmonisation of international standards.
The Olympism365 Summit will also include a Youth Summit and the Global Champion of Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion awards ceremony.
