Tea helps reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, thanks to its rich flavonoid content.

Evidence from studies has shown that consuming more flavonoids helps increase insulin sensitivity, reduce insulin resistance, and improve blood lipid composition.

A study conducted jointly by scientists from Queen's University Belfast (Northern Ireland), the University of Oxford (UK), and Edith Cowan University (Australia) investigated the link between a flavonoid-rich diet and type 2 diabetes on a large scale.

A total of 113,097 people from the UK Biobank participated. Their dietary habits were assessed over a 24-hour period, and the results were analyzed to calculate their flavonoid intake.

During the average follow-up period of 12 years, there were 2,628 cases of type 2 diabetes.

The results showed that consuming more flavonoid-rich foods (6 servings per day) reduced the risk of diabetes by up to 28%, compared to consuming fewer (1 serving per day), according to the health website News Medical.

And for every additional serving of flavonoid-rich foods consumed daily, the risk of developing diabetes is reduced by 6%.

Specifically, the results showed that consuming more black or green tea can reduce the risk of developing diabetes by up to 21%.

This finding encourages increased tea consumption as well as fruit eating, especially berries, to reduce the risk of developing diabetes.

Additionally, researchers found that eating more berries reduced the risk of developing diabetes by 15% and eating more apples reduced the risk by 12%, according to News Medical.

Researchers explain that flavonoid-rich foods achieve this remarkable effect because a flavonoid-rich diet improves weight management, glucose metabolism, kidney function, and liver function.

This finding encourages increased tea consumption as well as fruit eating, especially berries and apples, to reduce the risk of developing diabetes.
