E10 gasoline is a finished gasoline product made from mineral gasoline derived from fossil fuels along with biofuels, in which fuel alcohol is mixed at a certain ratio. Specifically: According to the regulations in QCVN 01:2022/BKHCN on gasoline, diesel fuel and biofuels, E10 gasoline is biofuel with a fuel alcohol content of 9 - 10% by volume.
Not only contributing to reducing dependence on fossil fuels, E10 gasoline also shows many outstanding advantages in engine operation and environmental protection.
Environmental protection, engine friendly
The Ministry of Industry and Trade is consulting and submitting to the Government a roadmap for using E10 gasoline to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, fulfilling the commitment to net emission balance by 2050, expected to be implemented from January 1, 2026.

According to domestic and international studies, ethanol has a high oxygen content, which helps improve the combustion process of the fuel mixture; therefore, E10 gasoline can help reduce carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions by up to 20% compared to traditional mineral gasoline. Reduced emissions mean reduced risk of air pollution and the greenhouse effect - one of the main causes of global climate change.
Not only beneficial to the environment, E10 gasoline is also considered an engine-friendly fuel.
Ethanol has a high Octane number (over 100), when mixed with traditional gasoline it helps increase the Octane number of E10 gasoline; this creates conditions for the combustion process in the combustion chamber to take place more evenly, thoroughly and stably, increasing work efficiency and limiting the phenomenon of premature detonation - a cause of damage to the engine.
Research results from state-level projects and international organizations such as the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) all confirm that E10 gasoline is completely compatible with current gasoline engines, including older generation engines.
Currently, E10 gasoline is widely used in more than 60 countries and territories. The United States and Europe have enacted laws requiring the use of fuels that blend gasoline with pure biofuel. Since 2018, countries in the region such as China and the Philippines have switched to selling 100% E10 biofuel; mineral gasoline is banned from retail gasoline stores and is only allowed to be used as an ingredient to blend E10 biofuel.
Green transition roadmap
To effectively implement the roadmap for blending and using E10 gasoline as planned, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has requested relevant units to develop synchronous groups of solutions, such as: Supporting domestic ethanol prices to stabilize supply and reduce the cost of E5/E10 gasoline; perfecting the system of standards and technical regulations for E10 gasoline; strengthening community communication; encouraging businesses to expand their biofuel distribution systems, especially in rural, mountainous and island areas...
Petrolimex also sets a strategic goal of becoming Vietnam's leading energy group in green, clean, high-quality, environmentally friendly energy products by 2035 based on 4.0 technology and comprehensive digital transformation. Biofuel trading is an important part of the energy transition orientation. Petrolimex is upgrading retail infrastructure and expanding the fuel ethanol blending network. At the same time, it is strengthening coordination with domestic and foreign ethanol producers to ensure a stable supply, serving biofuel business activities in a sustainable manner.
In parallel with the biofuel business, Petrolimex is researching new energy solutions such as hydrogen and some types of renewable fuels, in line with the energy transition trend and emission reduction requirements. Within the framework of strategic cooperation with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Petrolimex has also set a goal of building an energy transition roadmap to implement emissions according to the Government's commitment.
Mr. Tran Ngoc Nam, Member of the Board of Directors, Deputy General Director of Petrolimex informed: It is expected that from August 1, Petrolimex will pilot the sale of E10 gasoline at its affiliated gas stations in Ho Chi Minh City (before the merger) to evaluate market response, consumer behavior and the technical response level of the distribution system.
This enterprise also proposed that the Ministry of Industry and Trade soon direct the implementation progress so that key traders can proactively invest and convert technical systems, and at the same time propose to adjust some technical standards of the current TCVN to suit the mineral gasoline sources on the international market and be similar to technical standards in the region.
“Switching to biofuel, specifically E10 gasoline, is not only an inevitable step in protecting the environment, building a green economy, and implementing emissions according to the Government's commitment, but also a strategic solution to ensure energy security, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote green consumption,” said Mr. Tran Ngoc Nam.
