What is TOEFL iBT at home?
The TOEFL iBT Home Edition, often referred to as TOEFL iBT Home Edition, is a form of TOEFL iBT testing offered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) since 2020, during a period when many testing centers were affected by COVID-19.
This format allows candidates to take the exam at home, on their personal computers, with invigilators monitoring online throughout the entire process.
This is not a separate certificate from the TOEFL iBT. According to ETS, the TOEFL iBT Home Edition has the same content, structure, and scoring as the TOEFL iBT administered at testing centers. The test assesses four academic English skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
The main difference lies in the testing location. For in-center tests, candidates go to an authorized testing site. For at-home tests, candidates prepare their own computers, test rooms, and internet connections, and take the test under ETS's remote supervision.
To participate in the competition, candidates need a computer that meets the technical requirements, a camera, microphone, speakers, a stable internet connection, and a dedicated competition browser.
ETS requires candidates to check their equipment before the test day. If the equipment or testing space does not meet the requirements on the test day, the candidate may not be allowed to take the test.
Regarding the workspace, candidates must be alone in the room, and the desk must be cleared as per regulations, free of documents, electronic devices, or prohibited items.
During check-in, invigilators may ask candidates to present identification, and rotate the camera to inspect the room, desk, and surrounding area.
During the exam, candidates are monitored via cameras and microphones. Actions such as leaving their assigned spot without permission, the presence of other people in the room, using unauthorized devices, taking incorrect notes, or disrupting the monitoring process may affect their exam results.
Starting in 2026, the TOEFL iBT will undergo some adjustments to its scoring scale and results delivery time. ETS will switch to a 1-6 scale for each skill and overall score, with 0.5-point increments.
During the transition period, candidates will still receive additional points converted on a scale of 0-120. Official results will be published in your ETS account approximately 3 days after the test date.

According to ETS, the TOEFL iBT is accepted by over 13,000 organizations in more than 160 countries. Many universities in these countries use TOEFL iBT scores in admissions, scholarship applications, or to assess English proficiency for entry.
Some places consider the TOEFL iBT Home Edition equivalent to the traditional TOEFL iBT test administered at a testing center. Some programs or organizations may require the test to be taken at a testing center.
For university admissions applications, applicants should check directly on the admissions website of the school or program they intend to apply to. If the information only states "TOEFL iBT," applicants should ask the admissions office whether TOEFL iBT Home Edition is accepted.
Similarly in Vietnam, the recognition of TOEFL iBT and TOEFL iBT Home Edition is completely different, especially at universities and colleges, so test-takers need to research carefully.
Candidates need to review three groups of information. First, the regulations of the institution receiving the scores, including universities, scholarship programs, visa agencies, or professional councils.
Secondly, the technical requirements include a computer, camera, microphone, speakers, internet access, and exam software.
Thirdly, exam room conditions include private space, a desk, lighting, noise levels, and the ability to maintain connectivity throughout the exam.
What does IIG Vietnam say about TOEFL iBT Home Edition?
In Vietnam, the TOEFL iBT test is administered by IIG Vietnam, the national representative of ETS.
Specifically for TOEFL iBT Home Edition, candidates register and take the test directly through the ETS system. IIG Vietnam states that it does not organize the test or provide post-test verification services for this test in Vietnam.
IIG Vietnam recommends that candidates proactively research how well the TOEFL iBT Home Edition meets their intended purpose before registering.
