Seedling market in season

When the first rains of the season appear, it is also the time when people in the province are busy planting new crops and replanting ineffective farming areas. At this time, the seedling market also becomes more vibrant and bustling.

Hoa Thang Commune (Buon Ma Thuot City) is known as the largest seedling supply center in Dak Lak province, and is also a source of quality seedlings for the entire Central Highlands region. There are many establishments selling all kinds of seedlings, from fruit trees to industrial trees.

Ms. Ta Thi Ngoc Lan (owner of a seedling production and trading shop in Hoa Thang commune) said that normally, people only buy seedlings to plant during the rainy season, starting from around June. However, in the past two years, due to the continuous increase in agricultural product prices, from the beginning of May, many seedling dealers from localities in the province and neighboring areas have flocked here to buy seedlings to stockpile, serving the need for planting when the rainy season comes.

Choosing quality coffee varieties will help farmers produce more efficiently.

Since the end of April, Ms. Lan's store has supplied the market with about 50,000 - 60,000 seedlings of various types, of which coffee trees account for 80% of the total consumption. In addition, people are actively looking to buy trees such as durian, pepper and some other fruit trees. Although purchasing power this year is still quite high, the "heat" of the market is not as high as last year. "The store always focuses on the quality of seedlings; at the same time, it improves care methods, ensuring that seedlings grow healthily before being brought to market," Ms. Lan shared.

According to farming practices, farmers often choose the rainy season for new planting or replanting, because at this time there is less need for watering, less care work and low plant loss. However, with the trend of increasing seed prices seasonally, many farmers have proactively invested early to optimize costs and improve production efficiency. Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh (Ea Ning commune, Cu Kuin district) is one of the households that planned to replant their orchards as early as April 2025.

Identifying that choosing good and timely plant varieties is a key factor in determining the productivity and quality of the garden, Ms. Binh proactively sought out reputable facilities and nurseries to buy seeds. To replant part of the old coffee area, she invested in buying 200 TR4 coffee trees and 50 Ri6 durian trees, with a total cost of about 8 million VND. If she bought them at the present time, she estimated that the cost of buying seedlings could increase by 1 - 2 million VND. "Proactively buying seeds early not only helps save costs but also creates conditions for the trees to adapt to the local climate and soil," said Ms. Binh.

According to the survey, this year's plant variety market is quite rich and abundant in both variety and quantity, creating conditions for buyers to have many choices. However, the prices of some popular plant varieties are still maintained at a high level. In addition to increasing according to market demand, the prices of production materials, transportation costs and labor costs are also higher than before, causing the prices of plant varieties to remain "anchored" at a high level. Specifically, the price of real coffee varieties ranges from 6,000 - 7,000 VND/tree, grafted coffee from 16,000 - 20,000 VND/tree, pepper from 5,000 - 6,000 VND/vine, durian from 120,000 - 140,000 VND/tree...

Grasping the increasing demand for seedlings, from the beginning of 2025, Thuy Bich nursery (Krong Buk commune, Krong Pac district) has proactively produced and imported a large number of tree varieties. Coffee alone is prepared with about 50,000 trees, three times higher than the same period last year.

Seedling production and trading establishments are busy preparing goods to supply to the market.

Ms. Ho Thi Thu Hue (owner of Thuy Bich nursery) said that coffee varieties are currently the most sought-after product by people. In particular, the main varieties are new varieties with good drought resistance and high productivity such as: TR4, dwarf green, mango leaf, eggplant... To meet the needs of buyers, gardeners not only grow their own seedlings but also import more seedlings from seedling production facilities with clear origin and guaranteed quality. Currently, the nursery has more than 10 employees working, taking care of, consulting and selling. On average, the garden sells from 1,000 to 2,000 seedlings of all kinds every day.

According to Ms. Hue, her nursery only imports seedlings from reputable production facilities, ensuring quality. In addition, the nursery also advises and guides customers on how to choose the right seedlings and care for them properly to minimize loss. Therefore, many customers trust and order in large quantities, some even order in advance from the beginning of the season to avoid out-of-stock situations.

Currently, the province has 336 establishments providing plant varieties to serve the agricultural production needs of the people. However, besides fixed businesses with clear and reliable addresses, there are still many people selling seedlings on the street or on social networks at prices lower than the market price. This poses many risks to the quality of seeds and the rights of buyers.

Faced with this situation, people need to be extremely careful and should prioritize choosing plant varieties from reputable suppliers with clear origins.
