With about a month left until the Lunar New Year of the Snake 2025, the atmosphere in flower villages and ornamental plant gardens in Thanh Hoa has begun to become bustling. Garden owners are actively tending to each flower bed and plant, while also importing many new types and varieties of flowers to meet the demand for decoration and flower viewing during Tet. Traditional flowers such as chrysanthemums, roses, and peach blossoms still hold a dominant position, but many imported flower varieties and unique ornamental plants are also being brought in to enrich the market.
People in Dong Cuong flower village are busily tending to their flowers, getting ready to serve the public during the Lunar New Year.
In Dong Cuong flower village (Thanh Hoa City), the atmosphere in the final days of the year is more vibrant than ever. On vast fields of chrysanthemums, roses, and lilies, flower growers are busy tending to each plant, carefully pruning them to ensure they are ready for market. Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, a long-time flower grower here, shared: “To ensure the flowers bloom in time for Tet (Lunar New Year), we have to closely monitor the weather and adjust the sunlight and watering daily. This year, the weather is considered quite favorable, so the flowers are blooming on schedule and are beautifully colored. My family has high expectations for this Tet season, hoping the flowers will sell well to compensate for the hard work we've put in over the past months.” Besides cut flowers, growers also focus on producing potted flowers such as chrysanthemums, orchids, and bonsai peach blossoms... These are all popular flowers because they not only beautify the landscape but also symbolize good fortune and prosperity in the new year.
Ornamental plants are also a popular item during Tet (Lunar New Year). In Trieu Son district, kumquat gardens paint the entire area with the colors of spring. Local artisans not only meticulously cultivate traditional kumquat shapes but also invest time and effort in creating unique, personalized designs. Kumquat trees shaped like sailboats, or bearing the characters for "luck" and "fortune," are not only visually appealing but also convey messages of wealth and good fortune, making them very popular with buyers. Mr. Le Van Binh, a well-known garden owner in Hop Ly commune, said: "This year, we are focusing on designing plants suitable for decorating offices and homes. Bonsai kumquat trees are the most popular among customers due to their sophisticated designs, ease of transport, and display."
In Xuan Du commune (Nhu Thanh district), peach blossom trees are becoming a focal point attracting buyers. These peach blossoms are famous not only for their delicate pink flowers but also for their meticulously pruned and shaped forms, showcasing the skillful hands of the artisans. Mr. Le Van Hung, a man who has been involved in peach tree cultivation for decades, shared his pride: “This year’s peach blossoms are of outstanding quality. Thanks to favorable weather and proper care techniques, we received orders very early, hoping for a bountiful harvest this Tet holiday.” These peach trees, shaped like dragons or dragons, possess an ancient beauty, not only adorning homes but also symbolizing good fortune and prosperity.
A highlight of this year's flower market is the strong surge in online sales channels. Many flower growers and businesses have quickly caught up with the trend, utilizing social media platforms like Facebook, Zalo, and TikTok to introduce, promote, and sell their products. Live streaming on these platforms not only helps sellers reach a large number of customers but also creates close interaction and convenience for those who cannot come to the flower market. Mr. Nguyen Van Tung, a flower vendor at Vuon Hoa market, said: “Previously, customers often had to come in person to choose flowers, but now, thanks to online sales, we have expanded our customer base, especially those who are busy or live far away. Delivering flowers directly to customers not only saves time for both parties but also significantly increases the store's revenue.”
Despite the vibrant flower and ornamental plant market this year, gardeners and traders are facing numerous challenges. Purchasing power from some customer groups has decreased due to economic difficulties, coupled with pressure from weather conditions and demands for product quality. However, thanks to their business acumen and flexibility, especially the application of technology to expand their markets, flower and ornamental plant growers in Thanh Hoa remain optimistic about a successful Tet holiday season.
The market for flowers and ornamental plants during Tet (Lunar New Year) is not only vibrant but also imbued with the spirit of spring. Brightly colored flower pots and exquisitely crafted plants not only adorn homes during Tet but also reflect unique cultural traditions, symbolizing prosperity and abundance. They make meaningful gifts, conveying good wishes for a healthy and happy new year.
