The 10th grade entrance exam of the Gifted High School (Ho Chi Minh City National University) was held at three testing locations in Ho Chi Minh City, with the participation of 3,509 candidates from Ho Chi Minh City and many provinces and cities across the country.
In this morning’s exam, candidates will take two exams: Literature (100 minutes) and English (60 minutes). These are two of the non-specialized subjects of the exam. In addition to Math, which will take place in the afternoon of the same day, the specialized subjects will be held on May 25.
In order to create conditions for students to have the best preparation, before the exam, Talent High School announced the exam structure and sample questions. This helps candidates understand the exam format, difficulty level and appropriate review direction.
According to the school, this year's exam questions are designed closely following the 2018 general education program, focusing on testing students' thinking ability, ability to apply knowledge and synthesis skills, instead of requiring mechanical memorization.
The literature and English exam questions this morning were assessed by most candidates as being within their ability and close to the sample exam structure that the school had previously announced. In particular, the social argumentation question for the literature exam was considered quite open, allowing students to freely choose their perspective and approach to the problem.
Ngoc Minh - a student at Nguyen Hue Secondary School - shared: "Literature is not my major subject, so when I looked at the exam this morning, I felt relatively comfortable, not too difficult. I was able to develop my writing quite well. As for English, I found the exam easy, I was able to do many questions because they were similar to the sample exam that the school had given before."
Sharing the same opinion, Khanh Ngoc - a student at Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted, said that the literature exam was quite friendly to students.
“Even though I didn’t review much literature, I was still able to do it because the social discussion section was not restrictive. Students could choose one of two questions to do. I chose the first question because it mentioned copyright issues, a topic I was very interested in. However, I found the second question more difficult because it required analysis and finding the hidden problem,” Ngoc said.
Both Nha Dan and Cat Linh assessed that this year's exam closely followed the school's sample exam structure, with content that was close, practical and suitable for reality - Photo: HO NHUONG
Nha Dan, a student at Nguyen Huu Tho Secondary School, said: “Compared to last year, this year’s literature test was easier. However, the test time was 100 minutes, so I was not able to fully demonstrate my writing.” However, Nha Dan still highly appreciated the way the test was designed, creating conditions for students to approach the test in many creative ways.
For English, many candidates said that the test was clear and suitable for students.
Cat Linh - a student at Nguyen Du Secondary School - shared: "The English test consists of 50 questions, of which 35 are multiple choice questions that are quite easy. The essay part is also okay, not too complicated. I really like this year's literature test because the questions are well-posed, in-depth, and not stereotyped.
For example, the question uses the image of two birds, which suggests many different directions of analysis, such as the relationship between people and how we behave in life.
In addition, the social discussion section also allows students to freely connect with many modern aspects such as technology, ChatGPT, science and technology... I find the topic very close, open and true to the spirit of the sample topic that the school announced before.
This afternoon, candidates will continue to take the third exam, math, with a time limit of 120 minutes. Tomorrow (May 25), the exam will continue with specialized subjects - an important part to assess students' abilities in areas such as math, information technology, physics, chemistry, biology, literature, and English.
