As of 10:30 AM on February 23rd, according to Box Office Vietnam data, "Tho Oi" (Oh, Little Rabbit) has grossed over 250 billion VND. This is an impressive figure considering the film has only been in theaters for one week. However, to reach the 550 billion VND mark of " Mai ," the film needs another 300 billion VND – almost a second opening week in terms of revenue.

Tran Thanh expressed his wish that Tho Oi would surpass Mai in terms of revenue.

Rabbit, is it difficult to surpass Mai 's sales target?
But once the Lunar New Year holiday is over and the market returns to normal, the question arises: "Will it be as easy as Mai did?" This is no simple task, as the majority of the box office revenue from Lunar New Year films is concentrated within the peak holiday period.
The film Mai concluded its box office journey with a total revenue of 551,219,434,134 VND, becoming the first Vietnamese film to surpass the 550 billion VND mark. The key wasn't just the explosive opening weekend, but its ability to maintain a steady pace for many weeks after the Lunar New Year. Mai didn't win because of a single explosive week, but because of its sustained revenue – a crucial factor when the market moves beyond the holiday period.

Meanwhile, "Rabbit, Oh My Rabbit" is set to be released during the 2026 Lunar New Year season with a clear disadvantage: this year's market is highly competitive. Screening slots are shared among many Vietnamese and foreign films, making it difficult for any single film to easily capture the entire market share. After the Lunar New Year, theaters typically adjust screening schedules based on occupancy rates. If ticket sales slow down, the number of screenings will be reduced, directly impacting the film's ability to achieve significant box office success.
Another factor that needs to be frankly acknowledged: "Rabbit, Oh My Rabbit" is rated 18+. During the Lunar New Year season – a time when audiences often go to the movies in family groups – "age rating labels are a double-edged sword." The film may still be a resounding success, but to reach the 550 billion VND mark, a film usually needs broad public reach and the ability to attract audiences of various ages.
Tran Thanh's film dominates the box office, but what about other films?
In terms of content, "Rabbit, Oh My Rabbit" explores the dark side of love and marriage, delving into the layers of masks in marital relationships, infidelity, and betrayal. The film is highly dramatic, with many psychological twists, generating lively debate on social media. However, this very tension makes the viewing experience more intense, making it difficult to achieve widespread rewatching.
Meanwhile, although Mai also has an 18+ rating, the love story of the female protagonist is told at a softer pace, making it more relatable to a wider audience. The film balances drama and emotion, creating a long-lasting positive ripple effect. It is this element of mass appeal that has helped Mai maintain consistent box office revenue for many weeks.
