When is the best time to have a pre-marital health checkup?

According to the General Department of Population and Family Planning, Ministry of Health, pre-marital period is the time from when a person begins to mature until they get married (including adolescents who are not yet psychologically and socially mature but have developed their reproductive system).

Those who receive pre-marital counseling and health check-ups include: adolescents, young adults, people preparing for marriage, and those who need it.

Pre-marital counseling and health check-ups provide knowledge and health examinations for people preparing for marriage, especially adolescents and young adults, to detect, prevent, and guide the treatment of diseases that may affect health during marriage, pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding; risks of having children with congenital diseases or disabilities; contributing to ensuring a stable marriage and improving the quality of the gene pool.

Pre-marital health checkups can detect potential problems so they can be addressed promptly. Reproductive health screening helps couples ensure they are in good health before marriage, have healthy children, and avoid genetic diseases and birth defects.

Pre-marital health checkups involve a general health examination and an examination of the reproductive organs of both men and women. The general health checkup aims to detect any diseases or conditions that may affect the health of both the individual and their partner, such as hepatitis B, HIV, genetic diseases, heart disease, and sexually transmitted diseases. The reproductive organ examination aims to detect anatomical and functional abnormalities of the reproductive organs; inflammatory diseases; and sexually transmitted infections.

Women are asked about their medical history, both internal and external, especially obstetric and gynecological history; breast examination, external genital examination; vaginal examination (including taking vaginal fluid for testing, but only performed when a definitive diagnosis is required and with the client's consent). Men are asked about their medical history, especially trauma, orchitis, sexually transmitted diseases, ejaculation, and penile erection…

In cases where a disease or carrier gene is suspected, the individual will undergo further specialized examinations to determine the diagnosis and receive treatment guidance, as well as further specialist consultations as directed by the doctor.

The Department of Health /Population and Family Planning Sub-Department at the local level is the agency responsible for guiding, inspecting, and supervising pre-marital counseling and health check-up activities in the province/city.
