Ron DeSantis said this in a video announcing his campaign.

On May 24, DeSantis filed his candidacy documents with the Federal Election Commission before participating in a live broadcast on Twitter with the social media mogul, billionaire Elon Musk, according to AFP.

DeSantis was a baseball star at Yale University, earned a law degree from Harvard University, completed six years of military service in the U.S. Navy and served in Iraq, served five years as a congressman , and four years as governor of Florida.

In the weeks leading up to his presidential campaign announcement, DeSantis toured the United States, visiting early-voting states like New Hampshire and Iowa. He promoted his accomplishments as governor, including his battle with the federal government over policies related to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Is Republican "rising star" Ron DeSantis capable of challenging former President Trump?

DeSantis waited until the state legislature passed several policy victories before joining the race. According to Reuters, he signed measures to restrict abortion in Florida, loosen regulations allowing citizens to carry weapons, expand financial aid programs for students at private schools, and eliminate subsidies for diversity programs at public universities.

At 45, he was considered a rising star in the Republican Party, but in recent months he has been relentlessly attacked by Trump and has lagged behind the former president in most polls. According to AFP, despite facing numerous legal troubles, Trump still leads by a large margin of nearly 40 percentage points.

"We have to put an end to the culture of defeat that has infected the Republican Party in recent years," DeSantis said at the event with Musk.

Over 400,000 people joined the Q&A session, which encountered numerous technical glitches and delays. "There were so many participants that the servers were a little overloaded," Musk admitted.
