Considering the proposal from the Ministry of Interior dated December 24th regarding the proposed plan for the 2026 New Year's Day holiday, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra agreed with the proposal: in addition to January 1st, 2026, which is a holiday as stipulated, the working day of Friday (January 2nd, 2026) will be moved to the following Saturday (January 10th, 2026).
Therefore, for the 2026 New Year's holiday, civil servants and public employees will have 4 consecutive days off, from Thursday (January 1, 2026) to Sunday (January 4, 2026). This includes 2 consecutive days off due to swapping with working days and 2 weekly days off.
A unified 4-day holiday for New Year's Day has been agreed upon.
The Deputy Prime Minister also requested the Minister of Home Affairs to inform administrative agencies, public service organizations, political organizations, socio-political organizations, businesses, and employees of this opinion as prescribed.
Agencies and units should arrange and organize on-call departments according to regulations and work efficiently to ensure continuous service to the public.
Previously, the Ministry of Interior proposed a four-day New Year's holiday to solicit feedback from various ministries and agencies.
Speaking to Thanh Nien newspaper on December 24th, Mr. Ngo Duy Hieu, Vice President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, said that after receiving a document from the Ministry of Interior, the agency had solicited opinions from union members and workers on the proposed New Year's Day holiday schedule on the Vietnam Trade Union fanpage.
As a result, 62% agreed to swap Friday's working day (January 2, 2026) and make up for it on Saturday (January 10). The remaining 38% agreed with the option of only taking January 1, 2026 off.
Mr. Hieu shared: "The common wish of many workers is to have a 4-day New Year's holiday to regenerate their energy and spirit, thereby increasing productivity and work efficiency."
