With the guidance of her teachers and parents, Tran Thi Khanh Ly, a student at Minh Hoang Primary and Secondary School in Phu Cu District, has formed the habit of putting old batteries in the "battery house" located right at the school gate. Khanh Ly shared: "We collect old batteries to contribute a small part to protecting the environment." This small action of Ly and her friends has contributed to raising community awareness in the treatment of hazardous waste.
Fully aware of the harmful effects of old batteries on public health, since the beginning of 2024, the Women's Union of Minh Hoang commune has launched a movement to collect old batteries. The whole commune currently has two "battery houses" located at the commune cultural house and the school gate for people to dispose of used batteries.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan, President of the Women's Union of Minh Hoang Commune, said: "We have set up a reward fund for effective branches. Union members go to people's homes to propagate, and after understanding, people voluntarily bring old batteries." In particular, the Women's Union of Que Ai village has also created "battery houses" from recycled plastic waste, with the desire to replicate this model.
These meaningful activities not only raise people's awareness but also create a strong ripple effect, contributing to building a sustainable lifestyle in harmony with nature.
Not only stopping at propaganda, the Women's Union of Nguyen Hoa commune has creatively implemented the program "Exchange old batteries for plants" to encourage people to participate. Plants such as succulents, cacti... are mobilized by the association to be socialized or purchased at 10,000 VND/plant. In particular, the plant pots are recycled from plastic bottles and used milk tea cups, both saving money and contributing to environmental protection. Through this campaign, the Association has collected 15 kg of old batteries and sent them to the Provincial Women's Union for proper handling.
Ms. Pham Thi Thu Thuy, Chairwoman of the Commune Women's Union, said: Through the tree exchange campaign, it shows that the people and students responded very well. Currently, the association has a plan to prepare and plans to continue organizing the program "Exchange old batteries for trees" to collect waste batteries.
After a short time of implementation, the "battery house" model has been replicated throughout Phu Cu district, with 53/53 villages participating. Each year, the district collects more than 150 kg of waste batteries to send to the Provincial Women's Union for processing.
This is not just an empty slogan, but a practical action to guide people to classify waste and join hands to protect the environment. In particular, from May 2025, the Provincial Women's Union also has a program to "exchange new batteries for old batteries", for each box of batteries sent for treatment, the branches will receive 1 box of new batteries to exchange for people, creating more motivation for the branches and people to actively participate.
Ms. Le Thi Huyen, President of Phu Cu District Women's Union, added: The goal of the model is not only to collect old batteries but also to help people form the habit and awareness of not throwing batteries away with regular waste, minimizing environmental pollution. For the model to be highly effective, Women's Unions at all levels have coordinated with associations and organizations such as the Fatherland Front, women, and veterans to propagate and disseminate to a large number of people in residential areas.
With the synchronous and drastic participation of departments and the support of the people, the construction of the battery house model in Phu Cu district has brought about positive changes, towards the goal of protecting the living environment to become greener and cleaner.
