Waste collection and treatment: Many positive developments

In recent years, waste collection, transportation, and treatment in Tay Ninh province have seen significant improvements. From central urban areas to rural and border regions, the movement to sort, reduce, and treat waste is spreading strongly, contributing to building a green, clean, and beautiful environment, and moving towards sustainable development.

A clear shift from awareness to action.

In recent years, socio -economic development has led to an increase in solid waste generation, especially urban solid waste with complex composition, which has been putting pressure on the environment and creating difficulties for solid waste management in the province. The majority of urban household solid waste is generated in large cities.

Local authorities throughout the province have intensified efforts in waste collection and treatment. The rate of urban solid waste collection and treatment in the province has gradually increased over the years, from 85% (in 2012) to 100% today.

Mr. Trinh Hoang Minh, Director of Phuoc Minh Agricultural Trade and Service Cooperative, a unit operating in the field of waste collection, said that the cooperative was established in 2019 and officially began collecting waste in the area in the second quarter of 2020. Initially, the number of people registering for waste collection was limited, mainly disposing of waste themselves by burning or burying it. However, through the propaganda and mobilization efforts of various levels and sectors, 575 households have now registered for collection. The cooperative collects waste three times a week and transports it to a waste treatment company.

In residential areas, local authorities are stepping up efforts to raise awareness and encourage people to participate in the "Say No to Plastic Waste" and "Waste Sorting at Source" movements. Many self-governing models for environmental sanitation are being effectively maintained, such as the Green, Clean, and Beautiful Street, the Waste-Free Residential Area, and the Green Sunday initiative.

Over the past period, the Women's Union at all levels in the province has implemented many practical activities to raise awareness and change the behavior of members and people in environmental protection, gradually forming a green and environmentally friendly lifestyle.

Waste collection in the province

With the motto "Every woman - One action for the environment," the Women's Union at all levels has intensified propaganda and mobilization efforts to encourage members to actively participate in the campaign "Building a family with 5 no's and 3 clean's, contributing to nurturing Vietnamese family values" by changing consumption habits, limiting the use of nylon bags and single-use plastic products, and sorting waste at source; donating 730 trash cans and 280 shopping baskets to women members; organizing more than 30 campaigns to clear bushes and trim trees to ensure traffic safety; and planting more than 3,250 new trees and flowers along roads, with a total cost of approximately 4.5 billion VND.

According to Ms. Le Thi Thoai, a member of the Women's Union in Ninh Thanh ward, the implementation of the "5 No's, 3 Cleanliness" criteria has yielded positive results in the New Rural Development Program. Each house has a self-managed trash bin, and residents collect and dispose of daily household waste in lidded bins for processing by the waste collection unit. As a result, the streets are becoming cleaner and more beautiful, and the living space of the people is improving in a green, clean, and beautiful direction.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa, a resident of Duong Minh Chau commune, said: “Previously, people used to burn or bury garbage in their gardens. Now, the commune has a regular garbage collection vehicle, and every household has its own trash can, making things much cleaner. Children are also taught how to sort garbage at school.”

Recently, the Provincial People's Committee issued Official Document No. 3831/UBND-KTTC on the implementation of several urgent and decisive tasks to prevent and resolve environmental pollution. Accordingly, the Provincial People's Committee requested the Provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, relevant departments and agencies, and the People's Committees of communes and wards to urgently focus on reviewing and implementing regulations on environmental protection to enhance the effectiveness of enforcement and align with the organizational structure of the political system and the two-tiered local government model; strengthen the direction, management, and implementation of strategies, plans, projects, and tasks on environmental protection within their responsibility and scope of management, ensuring the "6 clear principles"; prioritize investment and mobilize social resources to address key and urgent environmental issues; conduct inspections, checks, and strictly handle violations by organizations and individuals within their authority; and disseminate policies and laws on environmental protection in the performance of tasks within their respective areas of management. Promoting the application of science and technology, innovation, digital transformation, and mobilizing private resources and public-private partnerships in environmental protection.

The Provincial People's Committee also requested public service units to implement solutions for the regular and thorough collection and transportation of solid waste in public areas.

Transforming waste into resources

Waste is recycled into fertilizer by Hue Phuong VN Green Environment Co., Ltd.

To address the environmental pollution problem, the province has focused on investing in and operating numerous solid waste treatment facilities with varying capacities, ensuring the processing of approximately 1,150 tons of waste per day. Tay Ninh is gradually shifting towards a circular economy, viewing waste as a recyclable and reusable resource. Many businesses have invested in waste sorting lines, plastic recycling, and the production of organic fertilizer from household waste, contributing to resource conservation and greenhouse gas emissions reduction.

For example, Hue Phuong VN Green Environment Co., Ltd. has a processing capacity of 300 tons of waste per day, with modern and safe equipment for waste treatment and recycling, such as: a hazardous waste incineration system with a capacity of 1 ton/hour; a safe landfill system with a capacity of 40 tons/day; a drum cleaning system with a capacity of 7.5 tons/day; and an organic fertilizer production system with a capacity of 140 tons/day, etc.

Waste is recycled into non-fired bricks by Hue Phuong VN Green Environment Co., Ltd.

Mr. Le Dinh Tuan, Head of Technical Department at Hue Phuong VN Green Environment Co., Ltd., stated: The company has separate processing procedures for both household and industrial waste. Household waste is sorted into inorganic and organic waste. Organic waste is used as raw material for composting, then packaged into organic fertilizer. Inorganic waste, after sorting and wrapping in nylon, is transferred to a recycling unit; it is then incinerated in a household waste incinerator. Industrial waste is collected separately for sorting, and reusable materials are transferred to a recycling unit. Industrial waste is incinerated in an industrial waste incinerator, and the ash and slag are utilized by the company for solidification to produce non-fired bricks.

Currently, the application of science and technology in waste treatment is crucial to addressing environmental issues. Advanced technologies such as waste-to-energy incineration, plasma gasification, and pneumatic waste transport systems can replace traditional methods like landfilling, helping to minimize pollution and utilize resources from waste. Modern, high-tech waste treatment models not only reduce the amount of accumulated waste but also contribute to creating a green, clean, and beautiful urban landscape.
