Sustainable income from OCOP products

Through the implementation of the OCOP program, Son La province has developed 204 products to date. These products bring economic benefits and sustainable income to the people. At the same time, they contribute to shifting agricultural production towards a commodity-based approach, becoming an important internal force in the new rural development movement.

Aratay Coffee Cooperative's OCOP product was recognized as a typical rural agricultural product in 2024.

Mr. Duong Gia Dinh, Deputy Chief of the Provincial Rural Development Coordination Office, stated: Based on research and learning from the experience of implementing the OCOP program in localities nationwide, our province has implemented and closely followed the criterion of " Economy and forms of production organization" in the National Criteria Set for building new rural areas. This includes developing production, creating jobs for rural laborers, and shifting the local economic structure.

After more than 6 years of implementation, the province has 204 OCOP products, including 1 five-star product, 62 four-star products, and 141 three-star products. Since 2023, the evaluation and recognition of OCOP products has been carried out at the commune level, instead of the district level as before; three-star products are recognized at the district level instead of the province, saving time and costs and allowing localities to proactively select outstanding products.

The Ruby plums produced by the Noọng Piêu Indigenous Agricultural Cooperative in Phiêng Khoài commune, Yên Châu district, have been applying VietGAP and organic farming practices since 2019. To date, the product has received high praise for its quality from partners and customers. The cooperative has developed an OCOP (One Commune One Product) product along with building its brand.

Ms. Nguyen Phuong Thanh, Deputy Director of the Cooperative, said: In 2023, the plum product was recognized as achieving OCOP 4-star status. Currently, the Cooperative has 30.5 hectares of plums with registered growing areas, of which 12 hectares are being cultivated organically. OCOP certification is not only a title for product quality, but also a passport to bring the Cooperative's products to major supermarkets nationwide.

The Lang Cheu Agricultural Service Cooperative in Lang Cheu commune, Bac Yen district, has identified the OCOP (One Commune One Product) program as a way to develop local specialty products using local raw materials and labor. Taking advantage of its abundant cassava raw material resources, the cooperative chose to develop cassava vermicelli. Mr. Song A Mang, Director of the cooperative, said: "Participating in OCOP has provided the cooperative with support in improving packaging and promoting products through trade fairs and trade weeks. After more than two years of achieving OCOP certification, the two products, fresh and dried cassava vermicelli, have expanded production scale, increased consumption, and increased product value by about 20%. In 2024, the cooperative's revenue reached over 800 million VND."

To promote OCOP products, the province has supported the construction of 12 OCOP product showrooms in districts, towns, and cities, and has brought OCOP products to e-commerce platforms. The Provincial Rural Development Coordination Office, in coordination with the Rural Development Boards of Quang Ninh and Da Nang provinces, signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a cooperative relationship, agreeing to leverage strengths to promote and connect OCOP products to the market...

The cassava vermicelli product of Lang Chieu Agricultural Service Cooperative has been recognized as a 3-star OCOP product.

At the same time, activities to promote and introduce products outside the province will be strengthened; businesses and cooperatives will be supported in participating in trade fairs and trade weeks in other provinces and cities, increasing opportunities for direct transactions with businesses. Through this, many products will be supported and promoted in joint ventures and partnerships with businesses inside and outside the province, leading to the signing of sales contracts.

Ms. Cam Thi Mon, Director of Aratay Coffee Cooperative in Chieng Chung commune, Mai Son district, shared: In 2022, the cooperative registered the Ara Tay Coffee brand under the OCOP program, bringing its coffee products to e-commerce platforms such as Portmart and Shopee... to promote the cooperative's products with the criteria of being clean, high-quality, and meeting customer standards. Therefore, the cooperative's product sales have been quite favorable and are expanding.

The OCOP program is exploiting local potential and strengths, promoting brand building, linking production and consumption of products, creating momentum for sustainable agricultural economic development, and contributing to improving people's lives.
