These days, farmers in Tien Hoa commune are busy harvesting their main crops such as rice, corn, and peanuts. In addition, sugarcane growers are also taking advantage of the time to weed, prune leaves, or cut sugarcane to sell to wholesalers during the summer.
Visiting Mr. Pham Thanh Hai's farm in Tay Truc village, we were impressed by the lush green sugarcane fields, with rows upon rows of neatly arranged stalks, their stalks a beautiful golden yellow. Mr. Hai explained that the sugarcane he grows is a sweet variety, primarily used for juicing during the hot summer months. Currently, his family sells wholesale to distributors at 4,000 VND/kg. In addition, his wife runs a sugarcane juice stall, earning nearly double the wholesale price. After the summer, any unsold sugarcane is processed into molasses and sold at a higher price.
Mr. Pham Thanh Hai shared that previously, his family grew rice and corn on these plots of land, but the income was not high. In 2023, after being encouraged and persuaded by the local Party committee and government to change the crop structure, he boldly switched to growing sugarcane. After more than two years of working with sugarcane, he realized that it is an easy crop to grow, requires little investment, is easy to care for, and yields high productivity. Therefore, from an initial trial planting of about 3 acres of sugarcane, his family has now expanded sugarcane cultivation to an area of 5,000 square meters , generating an annual income of about 160 million VND.
“Compared to growing rice or corn, growing sugarcane yields three times the profit, but requires less investment and labor. Sugarcane only needs to be planted once, then the roots can be left for 5-6 years. Subsequent crops only require fertilizing and weeding once. The most arduous part of sugarcane farming is staked and strung with ropes to keep the plants upright, preventing them from leaning, falling, or breaking, and pruning the old leaves,” Hai shared.
Unlike Mr. Pham Thanh Hai, Mr. Nguyen Phu Sanh's family in Trung Thuy village doesn't grow sugarcane for sale in the summer but for making molasses, so they usually plant it at the end of the year. Currently, the sugarcane is in the early stages of its growth cycle. This is also the stage where they begin pruning leaves and implementing measures to prevent the sugarcane from breaking or falling over.
Mr. Sanh said that his family regularly cultivates 2 sao (approximately 2,000 square meters) of sugarcane, harvesting it at the end of each year, pressing the juice, and boiling it to make molasses for sale during Tet (Lunar New Year). The value obtained from sugarcane is much higher than that of other crops. Therefore, the people of Trung Thuy village have maintained the tradition of growing sugarcane and making molasses for many years. The entire village has more than 20 households growing sugarcane, covering an area of about 2.5 hectares. “One sao of sugarcane can yield 200 liters of molasses, currently selling for 120,000 VND/liter on the market. Thus, each sao of sugarcane land brings in over 20 million VND per year,” Mr. Sanh said.
| Tien Hoa is a key economic zone of Tuyen Hoa district. In recent years, due to the impact of industrialization and urbanization, the area of agricultural land has gradually shrunk. Therefore, the local authorities have focused on promoting and encouraging people to change the crop structure to bring higher economic value per unit area. Currently, the entire commune has nearly 30 households growing sugarcane with an area of nearly 3 hectares, generating an annual income of over 500 million VND. |
Mr. Nguyen Quyet Chien, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Tien Hoa commune (Tuyen Hoa district), said: “Sugarcane is easy to grow on many different types of soil. It is a crop that yields high productivity and quality, bringing high economic efficiency and helping people gradually reduce poverty and rise to legitimate wealth. Therefore, in addition to promoting and encouraging people to expand the area of sugarcane cultivation, the People's Committee of the commune also organizes training and guidance for people on techniques for selecting seeds, caring for and controlling pests and diseases, and improving soil…”
In addition, Tien Hoa commune has established the Lang Khien Sugarcane Syrup Cooperative (Trung Thuy village), bringing Lang Khien sugarcane syrup products to participate in the OCOP program. In the future, Tien Hoa commune will continue to expand the sugarcane planting area and build a brand so that Lang Khien sugarcane syrup becomes more widely known and consumed, bringing higher income to the people.”
Sugarcane farming in Tien Hoa not only provides a high income for the people but also contributes to preserving and promoting a traditional craft: sugarcane syrup making in Khien Village.
