The meeting was attended by the Department of Asia-Africa Markets, the Electricity Regulatory Authority, the Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority, the Department of Oil, Gas and Coal. The Australian side was attended by Australian Ambassador Andrew Goledzinowski, representatives of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water and representatives of the economic section of the Australian Embassy.
On behalf of the leaders of the Ministry of Industry and Trade , Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan welcomed Ms. Jenny McAllister, Deputy Minister in charge of Climate Change and Energy and the delegation of the Australian Ministry of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water to visit and work with the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The Deputy Minister highly appreciated the sustainable and increasingly deep development relationship between Vietnam and Australia, marked by the two sides officially upgrading their relationship to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during the visit to Australia by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh last March. On this occasion, many cooperation documents between Vietnam and Australia in the field of Industry and Trade were signed, including the Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of the Vietnam-Australia Ministerial Dialogue on Energy and Minerals.
At the meeting, Ms. McAllister expressed her delight at the results of the Australia - Vietnam Green Economy Summit held in Ho Chi Minh City on April 16. The conference attracted the participation of 200 businesses, CEOs, experts in the fields of renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable finance, innovation... in the green economy. Both sides assessed the important and inevitable role of the energy transition towards green and sustainable, towards the common goal of net zero emissions - NetZero by 2050. The Australian side affirmed its commitment to support Vietnam in this energy transition process, including the development of renewable energy such as wind power and solar power.
The two sides agreed that the “Ministerial Dialogue on Energy and Minerals” is an important mechanism to help the two countries promote their areas of cooperation, on the one hand helping to provide orientations for future energy and mineral cooperation to meet the common development trends of the global energy industry, towards the goal of NetZero by 2050, on the other hand contributing to creating growth momentum for the bilateral economic and trade relations between Vietnam and Australia. The two sides agreed to closely coordinate to soon agree on the time to organize the first Session of the Energy and Minerals Dialogue.
On this occasion, Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan expressed his gratitude to the Australian Government for its commitment to support Vietnam with a package of 30 million AUD to develop clean energy for Vietnam, announced during the Australian Prime Minister's visit to Vietnam in June 2023; at the same time, he requested that Australia continue to support Vietnam in terms of experience, capacity building, technology, and sustainable and long-term supply of production materials and energy for Vietnam such as coal, gas, and liquefied natural gas.
Immediately after the working session, Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan and Ms. Jenny McAllister witnessed the signing ceremony of the “Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation to Promote the Development of a Competitive Electricity Market” between the Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam and the Australian Embassy. The Memorandum of Understanding is the basis for the Australian Government to support the promotion of exchanges, experience sharing, information updating, and capacity building training in the field of electricity regulation, competitive electricity market development, and operation of the electricity system/electricity market integrating a large proportion of renewable energy, in line with the new context of energy transition in Vietnam.
In the first 3 months of 2024, Vietnam's import-export turnover with Australia reached 3.2 billion USD. Of which, Vietnam's export turnover to Australia reached 1.4 billion USD, up 6% over the same period in 2023, Vietnam's import turnover from Australia reached 1.9 billion USD, down 12.6% over the same period in 2023. Vietnam's trade deficit with Australia was worth 506.9 million USD, down 40.6% over the same period in 2023. |
