In an Instagram post, Prime Minister Trudeau said he and his wife had decided to separate after talking to each other and asked the public to respect the privacy of their children.
"Sophie and I want to announce that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have decided to separate. As we have always been, we will remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other, for everything we have built and will continue to build," Trudeau wrote.
"For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our privacy and that of our children," the Canadian prime minister said.
Sophie posted almost identical content on her own Instagram account the same day.

The Canadian Prime Minister's Office also issued a statement about the separation, saying that Mr. Trudeau and his wife had signed a legal agreement, according to Reuters.
"They have worked to ensure that they have followed all legal and ethical procedures in relation to the decision to separate and will continue to do so in the future," the statement said.
"They remain a close family; Sophie and the Prime Minister are focused on raising their children in a safe, loving and collaborative environment. The family will be taking a vacation together, starting next week," Trudeau's office said in a statement.
According to Reuters, Mr. Trudeau, 51 years old, and Ms. Sophie, 48 years old, got married in late May 2005. They have three children.
After Mr. Trudeau became prime minister in late 2015, he and Sophie often appeared together at social events and on foreign trips. However, in recent years, Sophie has limited such appearances with her husband.
The couple traveled to London in May to attend King Charles' coronation and appeared together when US President Joe Biden visited Canada in late March.
Mr. Trudeau held a press conference on July 31 and took the subway in Toronto (Canada) that evening but has not been scheduled to appear in public in the past two days.
