To maintain and develop a reading culture among students, schools in the province have recently intensified investment in the "Green Library" model to create a friendly environment, helping students develop reading skills and habits, and contributing to improving the effectiveness of education .
Upon arriving at Xuan An Primary School (Phan Thiet City), we were impressed by the "Green Library" model located in the schoolyard. The school invested in and built this green library with an open, friendly, and harmonious design that blends seamlessly with nature. Books, newspapers, and stories are displayed on shelves, allowing students easy access to choose books that suit their reading needs and to take books to read as soon as they arrive at school, during recess, and after school. The library also features many flower baskets and potted plants, creating a friendly, cool, and fresh environment that helps reduce stress and stimulate students' reading desire. The "Green Library" has staff and teachers who guide students in following regulations, maintaining a clean and beautiful library, building a sense of responsibility towards the library, and fostering a reading habit among the students.
At the main campus of Binh An Primary School (Bac Binh district), the newly implemented "Green Library" model, "Vietnamese Language Enhancement Corner," has sparked interest and attracted many students to read. The library is designed with two sections of books arranged on two levels, situated under the shade of trees next to a pond with brightly blooming water lilies in the schoolyard. Not only is the design unique and eye-catching, but the outdoor setting also creates a spacious, cool, and nature-friendly environment, providing a comfortable feeling for students after each lesson. Furthermore, the Green Library serves as a venue for the school to organize outdoor activities and extracurricular events. Mr. Dang Duy Khanh, Vice Principal of Binh An Primary School, said: “The Green Library is a youth project implemented by the Binh An Commune Youth Union to create interest and build reading habits for students, especially to enhance Vietnamese language skills for ethnic minority students at the school. To date, the school library has more than 2,000 books of various kinds to serve the reading needs of the students. To maintain the library's operation and bring practical results, the school has directed and guided the library staff to regularly clean, inspect, and maintain equipment, tables, chairs, and books. At the same time, regulations have been established and specific timetables have been arranged for each class, ensuring that all students have access to books and participate in activities at the Green Library. Weekly, the books are changed according to specific themes, combined with diversifying the types of books displayed to suit each age group, in order to create interest and attract more students to voluntarily engage in reading culture.”
According to the Department of Education and Training, in recent years, the development of a reading culture has been a focus of educational institutions in the province, implemented through various forms to cultivate self-learning and reading skills, promoting proactive learning and helping students develop and expand their knowledge. In particular, the establishment of "green library corners" has helped officials, teachers, students, parents, and the community raise awareness of the great significance and importance of reading for enhancing knowledge and skills, developing inquisitive thinking and research, and fostering a reading habit among students. Through this, students have honed their reading skills, contributing to improved academic performance.
