For many years, the relationship between Eto'o and Onana was compared to that of a father and son in Cameroonian football. |
Cameroon has called up four goalkeepers for the tournament starting on December 21st, but Onana has still been left out. Previously, the 29-year-old goalkeeper was a regular starter and a key player for the national team for many years.
This decision by the Cameroon national team is even more noteworthy considering that the President of the country's Football Federation, Samuel Eto'o, decided to sack coach Marc Brys just hours after the squad for CAN 2025 was announced.
Many believe Onana was excluded from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations due to internal conflicts within his home country's football, stemming from his close relationship with Eto'o. For years, the relationship between Eto'o and Onana was likened to that of a father and son, forged during the Manchester United goalkeeper's early, challenging days at the Douala academy founded by the former Barcelona star.
However, rumors of tension between the two subsequently surfaced, clouding this once-strong bond. Last year, Eto'o faced a storm of lawsuits with a series of allegations of corruption, manipulation, and embezzlement.

Eto'o and Onana are rumored to have a questionable relationship. |
In this case, Eto'o was accused of receiving money from Onana through his charity foundation, in order to be selected for the Cameroon national team at a young age. It's worth remembering that in 2024, when dissatisfied with not being selected to play in the final group stage match against Gambia at the 2024 CAN, Onana confronted President Eto'o and criticized him for not interfering with coach Rigobert Song's team selection decisions.
Eto'o subsequently strongly denied the claim that Onana had paid to join his charity foundation: "I have heard that someone close to him claimed that Onana paid to join my foundation. That is completely false."
"At that time, he didn't even have money to eat, so where would he get the money to pay? He never had to pay anything. Those are lies," Eto'o asserted.
