Reports have emerged suggesting that a mixture of fenugreek powder, triphala powder, and aloe vera can help hair grow longer in just one week - Photo: THIP
Recently, a post appeared on Facebook titled "Fenugreek challenge - get long hair in 7 days," claiming that a mixture of fenugreek powder, triphala powder, and aloe vera can help hair grow longer in just one week.
However, according to the health fact-checking website The Healthy Indian Project (THIP), dermatologists assert that this information is misleading and can easily cause users to misunderstand the mechanism of hair growth.
Hair cannot grow "miraculously" long.
Dr. Sachin Gupta, a dermatologist at Amrita Hospital (India), explains that hair growth follows a cycle of three phases: anagen (growth), catagen (resting), and telogen (shedding). The anagen phase lasts for many years, determines the maximum hair length, and is influenced by age, hormones, genetics, and overall health.
Mr. Gupta emphasized that there is no way to make hair grow abnormally fast in just a few days. Believing in "secrets" circulating online is not only ineffective but also causes users to overlook the importance of proper nutrition and scientific scalp care.
According to Dr. Gupta, human hair only grows an average of 1-1.5cm per month, so any claims of noticeably longer hair in 7 days lack scientific basis.
Dr. Rashi Soni, co-founder of Rashi Hospital (Mumbai), also confirmed that hair only grows an average of about 1.25 cm per month. Believing that homemade herbal mixtures can make hair grow many times faster is unrealistic.
According to THIP, in traditional medicine, ingredients such as fenugreek, aloe vera, and triphala all have certain hair-nourishing properties.
Fenugreek contains phytoestrogens and nicotinic acid which help increase blood circulation in the scalp, strengthen hair follicles, reduce hair loss, and stimulate hair growth. Aloe vera has natural enzymes that help balance pH, reduce dandruff, and nourish hair follicles.
Triphala – a blend of three fruits: amla, haritaki, and bibhitaki – has antioxidant properties, supports scalp detoxification, and reduces oxidative stress, a cause of thinning and weak hair.
However, while these ingredients may help strengthen hair and reduce breakage, no clinical studies have proven that they make hair grow faster than normal.
It's important to distinguish between "preventing hair loss" and "stimulating hair growth."
Experts emphasize the need to clearly distinguish between "preventing hair loss" and "stimulating hair growth." Some herbs may help reduce hair loss, but they don't make hair grow faster, as this rate depends on the natural biological cycle of the hair follicle.
Improper hair care, nutritional deficiencies, or prolonged stress can disrupt the growth cycle, causing hair to weaken and thin.
To have long, strong, and healthy hair, doctors recommend maintaining a healthy lifestyle: eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, limiting chemicals, and avoiding high temperatures when styling.
If your hair is growing unusually slowly, you should consult a dermatologist to check for hormonal imbalances, thyroid problems, or scalp conditions.
